    Hi guys and gals.

I need to know if there is any downside or known problems by switching from a parallel cable that comes with the PC colorcamms to a USB to parallel cable instead. I am using a Dell XPS laptop for most of my graphic design and it does not have the parallel port. I know there are USB to parallel cables sold everywhere but I was wondering if this is going to give me any problems. Please advise. Thanks!!

The main problem with any sort of adapter cable is loss of infomation between the two devices Probably your best bet would be to buy a cable and try it yourself as for anyone to be able to give you a proper answer they would need to be running exactly the same set up you are, ie same laptop, same printer and same RIP. I doubt even Dell would be able to give you a yes or know answer. Can’t you do your designs on your desktop and then transfer them to your desktop before printing?

I guess I could just use a usb travel drive and transfer the info over to the desktop then print from there. My desktops just a much worse and slow machine, so maybe would be best to upgrade that as well.

What is your opinion of FlexiSign Pro? Whats the usual feelings on using this program? I looked up some info and it seems to be a good one to use.

If you are only using the desktop for printing and not designing then it shouldn’t be that slow, best way to upgrade it is to install as much memory as the motherboard will allow.

As for flexi it is a good program from what I know but it is unfortunately out of my price range. I use a program called inspire pro which was also made by scanvec and is a predecessor to flexi. You will be able to print directly from it using your printer as it is one of the printers the software supports.
What software are you using just now because if it does everything you it. need it to is it really worth the expense involved in changing, plus the fact that you will need to learn another design program if you are not already familiar with it

I mainly use Corel Draw, Paint Shop Pro, and a little bit of Adobe Illustrator. I ended up learning different stuff on each one, so there are things I like about each program that I use them for.

Any program where I can visually see the image (print preview) while I’m print previewing and where I am able to draw the plotter lines to cut from, etc and size it before I print then Im fine with it. I havnt actually tried to do this yet as I am still setting up everything.

Im really new at this so bear with me. Thanks for the help so far!!

You probably have a spare pci slot fit a parallel to that and it solves the issue.
I tried the converters and couldn’t get them to work The net is littered with people who couldn’t get them to work neither.

Goop the guy is using a laptop so he won’t have a spare PCI slot he can use. Don’t know why this model doesn’t have a parallel port guess with so many printers being USB these days Dell have decided it is a redundant fitting.

Keith as for being new to all this don’t worry about it everyone has to start somewhere and although I am no expert I am quite happy to share what I do know where I can. you will probably have noticed if you read the posts on the boards that there are a lot of people on here who are experts and they are all very friendly so just keep asking the questions.

    Martin, thanks alot.

Yea, the laptop has 6 usb connectors, but on the newer high end laptops, most have done away with the parallel ports, they are just too big, and with the dvi cables, etc for tvs, and high definition stuff, they pretty much dont have room left for it, and figure enough people wont use them I guess.

I am just going to add a little memory to the desktop and get a new hard drive. Those should solve its main problems.

Thanks again, the info was definately helpful!!
