can anyone help please with removal of plastisol ink?
Posted by coylo5 on 16 February 2007 at 18:48Hi everyone.
i just bought 30 screens and the previous owner didn’t even bother to clean them off before sending them to me, so i emailed a girl on eBay to purchase some screen wash and she told me that it cant be sent to N.Ireland from the UK because customs wont let it through- is this right?
If so what are my options, is the there another product i can use?

You should be able to get it at a local hardware store or somewhere like B&Q. It may be right about customs if it is classed as a dangerous chemical.

what am i supposed to look for tho? i don’t think b+q do screen printing supplies.

when I was a screen maker, I used a combination of Degreaser, Stencil removal (like white xtals) and a strong cleaner that lifted the ink. You need HiPressure hose and washout cabinet.
Think it was Keeps stuff but I know Sericol sells it all.My advice to you is this is the expensive part of screen making, as you need several things to make screens so go easy on your task at hand.

am i looking for a strong paint thinner? like the ones in a car parts store

If you cant get hold of a strong screen wash – maybe it would be worth purchasing some mesh & adhesive through ebay and restretching some of your frames – mesh is relatively cheap and mesh adhesive is about £10 a litre – creating a screen stretching device to cover screens up to 2 foot square is easy to do.

Hi, Stay away from strong paint thinners as they might melt the glue used to attach the mesh to the frame. If its only plastisol ink, white spirits will take it off, then degrease with fairy up liquid and wash off with power hose – this will leave the stencil. If it is a direct stencil you will need some "Stencil Strip" to take it off. Stencil strip is available from sericol and can be posted as you can get it in powder – crystal form. Mix well with approx: 10L – 20L water depending on instructions. Apply to wet stencil with brush or rag – leave for 30 seconds then give it a good blast with power hose. A last wash with screenwash or white spirits then degrease with fairy up liquid then another blast with hose.
Screen should be clean – dry it then coat with emulsion in darkroom.Cheers John

Follow this link http://www.myspace.com/fearless5870 it will give you the basic idea on how to stretch your own screens

What is the screen block made of? is it a photosensitive emulsion, or the green lacquer-adhered autotype film, or what?
Some bleaches will work to remove emulsions- whatever you use, don’t let it dry in the screen.
I have had great success just using a caustic soda solution, with appropriate safety measures taken of course. Wipe it on with a rag, sit for 3 or 4 minutes & pressure blast off.
