can anyone help me with making up banners?
Posted by Darlene Johnson on 10 December 2008 at 16:14We are making banners for over 3,000 plus dealers across the country. We are attempting to put a process in place once we cut the banners off the roll. Currently using double sided tape to hem banners and grommet once all are hemmed from the roll. This process does not move quickly at all and we need assistance to speed up the process. Any suggestions?? 😮

Banner Welding Machine?
http://www.plasticweldingequipment.co.uk/pvc-welding-machine-tarpaulins-banners-and-marquees-pr-16199.htmlhttp://www.welwyntoolgroup.co.uk/page.asp?id=24
Or use a high frequency welder… or buy a sewing machine?
We use our 2x6m auto flatbed cutter, to cut out the banners (if needed)
Then we use a high frequency welder and a pneumatic eyelet machine. We also have some ladies that sew banners if requested.
Just some ideas

I checked out the link and our banners are printed from our printer, cut to 3×8, hemmed and grommets put in for the last phase. We have rolls of non cut printed banners that would require more space for a machine like the one you linked to. Advise if you know of another method close to what we are pursuing. Thanks!

Hems are only realy needed on the cheeper laminated banners (where mesh shows clearly on back) a good quality scrim banner does not need a hem if it is to mounted on a wall, accross a street exposed to alot of wind yes but i did a load of 17x .6 M banners that have been up for over a year in Spain, they where not hemmed.
When i print i feed the media stright onto cutting bench from printer and cut and eyelet while being printed.
Our loacl Tesco has loads of banners outside all with out hems they also look better as they hang alot smother with out hem

We are currently using 13oz single sided white 35×115 banner rolls. We feed the blank roll into the digital printer for print. It feeds onto an empty canister and the printed banners are on one roll. Once finished printing it is moved to the table for cutting. The roll is placed on the table and manually fed thru the cutter as each banner has to be measured to ensure they are the same size when cut.
Once cut, we use the double sided tape and tape each banner by measuring each side. Place the hemmed banner on the table under the top table where it is held until ready for grommets.
Once all are hemmed we take one banner hemmed put back on top table and manually measure for each grommet so that they are even on each side. 5 grommets top and bottom are punched into the banner.
Once the banner has grommets it is rolled up and placed on shelf for sales team to pick up and disburse to the dealers location. This process takes approximately 15mins to produce one banner. We need to be producing much more as we do not have the manpower to keep one person on this task for the entire 8hr day.
If you have a better method please advise. Thanks!!

Just a thought, why not just print and outsource the finishing, trounce do a good job and because its what they specialise in, can probably do it faster and cheaper than in house, worth a phone call?
And by the way Darlene, it would be nice if you introduced yourself in the say hello forum.

We print a trim border onto our banners, so no need to measure. Just whizz
round with a stanley knife, apply the tape & fold over. We also print eyelet
marks on, so that there is no need for measuring them either. When taped,
just go round with the eyeletting machine. -
why don’t you employ more staff :lol1: or outsource the job to someone that can handle that kind of qty.
Cheers John

and there was me thinking that was the idea of business was to have a person gainfully employed all day 😀
every part of the process needs looking at to see whats required and how to make it quicker,

just go round with the eyeletting machine. This was the most helpful response as I went back to our JV33130 Mimaki printer and we are currently setting it up to print the trim and eyelets. This alone will assist with speeding up the process.
As for the 8hr day. We have one guy who prints all our flyers/brochures in house and also screen prints our signs. He is a multi-tasker thus we did not want to take all his time away from doing the other jobs to focus on banners when the process can be streamlined. Once we get the pre-marked trim and eyelets it should move faster and easier.
Any additional comments are most welcomed!! THANKS!

i say again
every part of the process needs looking at to see whats required and how to make it quicker,
if the person doing the cutting said oh it would be nice if there was printed marks to cut to and marks for the holes.
follow the job from start to finish identify the problems and start thinking.
enjoy

Darlene,
How long do you estimate the jv3 will take to print the 3000 banners?Peter

Just a thought – and this might be mad, stupid or indeed idiotic…
Now obviously it is depending on the location these will be fitted – but assuming it’s flat against a wall (not strung between two poles) use a heavier material and dispense with the hemming…just eyelet them…at worst adding in a few extra.

Hi Dave,
See 9 posts ago i suggested no hem. I print stright out of printer on to cutting bench and cut along edge lines, i also print 10m/m dot for eylets so cut and eyelet as printing.
I did a job last week 50 banners printer ran for 2 working days and overnight and i printed two at a time side by side, x this by 60 and you have enough to keep your printer flat out for 1/3 year.

Russell.

I outsource my banner finishing for cheaper then I can pay myself an hourly rate to do my own banners. I don’t even trim them up. Print them onto a take up roll and ship them out. Get them back in two days full cut trimmed, eyelets, ropes etc etc.

i gotta say, we print all our banners on our JV33 160, and just bought the nifty lil tool from JAG Supplies which has sped up our finishing time no end!

I have almost completed the banner process thanks to your suggestions. I am still continuing to struggle with the hemming process. I have put a printed trim around the banner for folding and hemming, however putting the double sided tape down manually is extremely time consuming. Additionally, I am struggling to keep the tape even on the edge of the banner. Any suggestions on this end would help..
Thanks!

hi darlene
just spotted this thread…here is a nifty banner hemming tool VIDEO… its based in the states too i think.
might be worth considering….http://www.usbanner.com/BannerCyclone.html
i came across it a few years ago and like most things there is probably a bit of a learning curve for the operator but would definately speed up your process i think.
best of luck.

I have checked on this site as well. We are currently looking into this device now as it is made in Greenville, SC. Thanks for all the input as it has been most helpful!

Is this printer capable of printing the trim line and the eyelets onto the banners without me having to modify the file in photoshop for print? Advise… Thanks!
-
In Versaworks if the file is an EPS you can add a margin and trim marks to add the trim marks and a bleed.
