can anyone help have problem with cutting round prints?
Posted by Richard Daniel on 5 July 2007 at 18:00Hi all
I have a JV-3 160 and would like to buy a cutter for it,
I have been told the mimaki cutter is the only one to use with it,
From what i gather you need to get the software to set up cuts around the prints first, i would like the mimaki, but the price on it puts me off (about 5k)
As for cutting software i use flexi-sign pro, it has rip software on it, does anyone use this to rip and print?
I figure in doing this i can rip my print & cut jobs in flexi then load the vinyl into my cheaper plotter and cut.
Is there anyone who uses a method similar to this,
My mimaki is ace and in an ideal world i would id have the plotter along side it but just cannot justify that sort of moneyMany Thanks
Ritch

Richard, if your software produces reg marks (Im sure it does) then any plotter capable of locating them, should work.

any reputable cutter with registration mark sensors will contour cut your graphics. thats unless mimaki have a certain type ive not heard of!
Roland cutters, summa cutters, graphtec cutters to name a few all have this option, some come with it as standard. -

So basically what your telling me is the guys @ some stalls on the sign show have been telling me porkies 😮 the horror, shoulda known
This is what i asked them time and time again. Everytime they replied it would only work with the mimaki plotter, so this begs the question, who is using what to cut round their mimaki prints?
Many thanks for your response peter

there are issues.
if you buy from the same people who supplied the printer then when its not to your liking you can jump up and down on them.
if you buy else where another make the one will blame the other.but the real problem is the type of marks the cutter is expecting and the calibration between the two machines, all adjustable but you will have to sort it out i dout if they will.

I use signlab, and all the common types of registration marks are included in the software.
like Chris said if the cutter software knows what to look for it should not be a problem. Its a bit long winded to explain, but it is possible to do it manually on some plotters, using a "bomb" site, Gerbers do it on their small sprocketed machines, but it can be done on grit roller plotters, old hat, but just illustrating that there is nothing special about contour cutting.
What sort of contour cutting do you need?
Just for large stuff, or for cutting text and labels?

Many thanks for the repsonse guys.
Ill be using it for all sorts really, cutting small labels & also around large digital images i.e 12′ x 4′

Peter,
I think i know what your talking about, we used to use it on our edge where i used to work, looking throught th etelescope type thingy 😳
I have often thought about trying to get it manual, maybe printing a box and stting my jaguar up to cut the boa and outlines too, i reckon with enough time it may be possible to get a good cut,
now i know that i dont just need a mimaki plotter ill look around at some others with the eye, anyone knwo any cheep suggestions?
Thanks again for all your help

thats a lot of print to muck up.
as i was learning to trust my setup i plotted with a water based pen first to check as it just wipes off.chris

Very true my friend, but in honesty for something that size id get more piece of mind cutting it by hand after i taped it up, so more labels.
Does anyone knwo if ts possible to get the bombs Peter was talking about for a jaguar? id be happy to only print at 1360 wide if it meant the plotter i have can do the job in hand
Thanks again

for acurate small work you will need to cut small areas with multiple reg marks anyway, say a metre at a time,
so an automatic sensor is the only way.
have you priced up the mimaki 130, I got mine as a package with the printer, but I dont think they are anywhere near 5k on their own.It may be that you need to pay just that bit more to get the job done right.
cheap and good dont usually go together

:lol1: never a truer word spoken peter.
I did look into these to as they still hold 1580 (i think) but everyone really seemed surpised i was asking and said they only ever really come in package deals now days.
Ill look into it but i know there over 3k.
Ill let you know how i get on
Thanks again

no no no
you need a plotter with a optical rec system
suma opusgraphtec arms
roland
they also compensated for slight misalignment and distance.
the old bomb aim system worked ok on sprocket plotters
