  • Can anyone forsee any issues with application to GRP?

    Hi all,
We have been asked to cover a number of GRP panels with carbon fibre effect vinyl.
These will be a few days old when we come to apply. Can anyone forsee any issues with this? does grp out-gas like new paintwork?
    Paul.

    Hi Paul,
At first GRP does give of fumes (styrene).I don’t think grp out gasses as such as it is a chemical reaction that cures the resin. GRP can take upto two weeks to cure fully and attain full strength but that shouldn’t be a problem to you what may be a problem is the mould release that they have used, this maybe a wax or a synthetic mould release that is used in the industry. The product keeps some of this on it when it comes out of the mould so you should clean it well if you are fitting the vinyl straight to a gel coat finish.

    Steve,

Many thanks for this… I will watch out for the release agent. Could you suggest a suitable cleaner? is meths or IPA ok on GRP?

    Thanks
    Paul.

To be safe I would clean with a fine cutting paste first to make sure as synthetic release is silicone based, but check first with the manufacturer as they may have already done this. Then just use your usual panel wipe. Go lightly with the heat gun after as behind the gel coat there could be little pockets of air, when heated they blow up in to blisters on the gel coat.
