  • can anyone advise why Illustrator 10 takes a while to boot?

Posted by Aaron & Chris on 23 May 2005 at 14:38

    Hi all,

We are are running Illustrator 10 on windows XP we have a problem in that Illustrator seems to take forever to boot up, we have investigated all possible avenues but have not yet found a solution to the problem.

Has anyone experienced this problem and if so has anyone managed to sort it.

Any advice would be much appreciated as we have drawn a complete blank.

    Regards

    Aaron 😀

How many fonts do you have installed, Illustrator registers all of the fonts on your system befor loading.

can be really slow if you dont have loads of RAM

Looking at a another forum (tek-tips) the aiprefs file was mentioned a being possibly currupted and also the number of fonts in the fontlist file, apparently aiprefs and fontlist file can be removed/moved and Illustrator will rebuild them on startup. I’m not an Illustrator man though – just passing on what I have read.

Are all other apps running OK?

I have seen similar problems when your processor gets too hot. Check that the cooling system on you processor is wrking correctly

My Illustrator experience in on Macs but I’ll see if I can think of anything.

Firstly, has it always been like this or has the problem suddeny started?

Secondly, what plug-ins do you have installed? I once had CADtools causing an interminable start-up but upgrading to the latest version cured it.

Thanks all, we eventually worked it out in the end.

The problem was caused by files called “ADOBEFNT” for future reference. These files from what we can work out load up all basic font info upon startup.

We searched the system and deleted all these files and Illustrator re-built them. We think it is along the lines of what Aaln (brushman) said earlier.

Thank all for your help, it’s much appreciated.

    Aaron.
