  • can anyone advise me on copyright laws please?

    Hi All,

You might get this question asked over a hundred times in a year, but I am hoping that one of you might be able to point me in the right direction.

Before I ask the question I will give you a very small brief as to who I.

My name is Fred and I am 46 year old (This week). I am disabled and unable to get a full time job. After looking on many web sites, one being E-Bay I thought there might be a market that I could tap into to make a little bit of cash to keep me going.

The question that I would like to ask is.

Where do you buy the master graphics for you to be able to sell the decals without breaking any copyright laws.

I know that I could take the graphic that I need off a web page, touch it up in Photoshop and then sell it as a vinyl decal on e-bay. But is this not classed as stealing from another competitor.

I have seen decals for sale on e-bay and I can presume that these are royalty free which I could use, but what are the chances that the graphics on these disc are the same as the ones which are being sold in numbers on e-bay.

I hope that some will take to time to read this and try and point me in the right direction.

    Many thanks,

    Fred

    Hi Fred,

unfortunately most of the stuff you see on eBay will be breaking some copyright law, to be honest I don’t think it’s worth the risk for the small reward in flogging this stuff

    Hi Neil,

Thanks for your reply, I know that there is not much to be made but, as lot as it keep me active during the day I would be happy just to make a few pounds a week.

I was thinking of doing this more as a hobby than a business, unless it took off and I could make some real money.

How do you go about getting permission to use corporate names/logos. I fly model helicopters and I was thinking of doing some decals for the members of the club that I am in.

    Cheers,

    Fred 🙂

    Hi Fred, ……….. welcome.

Please don’t think I’m trying to be flippant but you do not mention if you have skills in graphic design.. it’s not as easy as taking something off a web page (which is unlikely to have a good enough resolution) and working on it to output to a printer or cutter and then expect it to sell on Ebay in enough quantities to make it worthwhile.

If you research the other sellers of this type of stuff on Ebay, look at their selling history, you will find that most move only 3 or 4 items a week for a fiver each or so, not a lot of profit for so much work.

As to copyright, then you are right to breach copyright or to purchase pirated software is looked down on and carries possible serious consequences…. Ebay has cleaned up it’s act a lot and you are unlikely to find yourself buying dodgy stuff nowadays.

Point is though most of the clipart has already been bought and used by Ebayers, much better to design your own unique stuff of quality designs and sell that, much more profit.

Hope that helps, I’m sure others on this illustrious site will have their positive suggestions….

    Ian

To do it "correctly" you would need to contact each individual company & ask them for permission to recreate there logo which they will probably say yes to for a very small fortune 🙄

or you just produce them and sell them at your own risk, roll of the dice i’m affraid

    Hi Guys,

    Thanks for the advice.

In answer to one of the questions I have taken a couple of courses one being a City in Guild in graphic art and design and the other was an on-line course with a Manchester college doing basic photoshop.

As for profit I am not to bothered about this. Like I said I am disabled and at the moment I am not very active in the mind department. I do get out a lot so I am not tied to the house but I am bored and I would like something to do during the day. If I only make enough to cover the cost of the vinyl I would be happy.

    Cheers,

    Fred

Well then go for it Fred, best wishes.

You mention vinyl, I presume you have a plotter rather than a vinyl printer, therefore you need to get your head around a vector drawing programme like Coreldraw or Illustrator, that in itself should keep you occupied for several years, I’m still trying to find how to work it better (bitmap & vector) after over 20 years!

    Hi Ian,

I have a Fosion C24 USB Plotter/Cutter, and I am using Coreldraw and sign tools 3 for the cutting.

I have a very good friend who has a business selling Photo’s on canvas and he was thinking of doing this as well, but the canvas side took of very well as he now has 6 machines and rents a small unit.

He sold me his complete package, but he had no clipart.

    Cheers,

    Fred

I think for your needs from what you say, you are looking for corporate/ car/bike logos, maybe boy racer stuff as well as other clipart then first stop might be to google ‘brands of the world’, filled with usually vector logos to download….. site is totally legitimate as far as I am aware but as has been said, not sure of legality of utilising them to sell on, although, as has also been said, many on Ebay are doing so…..

Hi Fred, I started off by doing vinyl work for the local boy racers – still do quite a few actually. Do a quick surf around ebay for ‘tribal graphics’ – should give you some ideas. But as you have design skills and an excellent package- USE THEM! and start designing your own unique graphics. One off graphics are too time consuming and low profit for the Big Boys to bother with but this is certainly a perfect market to think seriously about – there is a real sense of satisfaction watching your work zoom past. And here’s a quick tip; when the customer expresses shock at the price you are quoting for a graphic offer to knock a pound or two off if you can include your web site in the design. Do it in a small contrasting colour (layered vinyl) and soon word will spread. On your quiet days – put together a simple web site and this time next year you could be as rich as Robert Lambie. Good luck!

you do need to read the t and c’s though.
botw is a legitimate site. but its down to you to to acquire any permissions etc. to use any copyright material
And I dont think it is in the interest of uksb to promote the ebay sticker business

Ford will even come after you for printing a picture of your own car on a t shirt if the Ford logo is visible, unless you contact them and come to an arrangement.
