  • can any one help with a jpeg to signlab problem i have?

Posted by neilcallaway on 8 March 2009 at 22:57

hi all I’m using sign lab 7.1 and have an image sent to me by a customer, i have tried to cut the jpeg and its says there’s no image to cut so in photo shop cs3 i made sure it was rgb 8 bit as i read in the forum that would cure it, it hasnt and even if i save as tif or psd it says the same.

the only way i can get it to cut is by saving as eps but then its just a square it cuts and not the image

really stuck on this one I’ve always avoided jpegs as i cant get them to work

    hope someone can help me

    many thanks
    neil

Oh dear – you lack some fundamental understanding about the differences between vector and rendered graphics. Have a read through this which should provide some basic understanding:-
    http://www.eastbywest.com/pub/vectorbitmap/

I am very surprised that, at the stage you are at, you are using signlab 7.1 (which is a sophisticated vector based program) – where did you get it from?

Only vector drawn images can be cut – Jpgs need to be vectorised before you can cut them

    Some more information here :-

    Goodness me
after using signlab for four years, and not knowing the difference between a raster and a vector is quite amazing, Are you really a sign writer, as you say you are?

You say your manager gave it to you, is he a signmaker also?
just wondered why he would buy you the program?

Neil you can cut jpg’s, but you need to vector them, cadlink has good tutorials on their site, on how to do this, and if I remember, they are on the signlab disc also

peter as i said i am a newbie and signwriting was not our main business he bought it as he was told it was the best you could buy he was that type) maybe the best with the right tuition but he wasn’t prepared to do that so i basically all of my graphic are prepare eps and ai so relatively easy to cut, now i am hoping to make this my primary business and have come across these problems Ive not really had to deal with

i do appreciate all the help from you guys and as i said i am a newbie but wanting to learn

    cheers

Ok maybe we are getting somwhere,
ai and eps files can contain JPGs, so did you design the files or were they supplied, sorry if I sound a bit off handed, but asking the questions that will help to give you the best advice.

    quote neilcallaway:

thanks peter you don’t sound off handed at all i was supplied them never really had to do anything with photoshop at all

    Neil
Photoshop is not a vector program, and if you have signlab for cutting you do not need other programs for creating the designs. Who supplied the files for you? they must have had some knowledge of vinyl cutting?
I just had a look through your other posts since joining the boards,
and you dont seem to have given us an intro, or even a bit about what you do or intend to do with signage, maybe if you give a quick description of your background, and future aspirations, we can give you some appropriate advice. your present knowledge appears to be very basic, for someone that has used signlab for 4 years

yes no problems i will do that for sure 4 years ago i worked for a company that did numberplate then as a branch out they started do small(very small sign writing) only a small company but all the graphics was supplied by disc from where i don’t know but as you can tell it was very easy to use and i basically i am self taught at the minute i have been doing more and more on local markets and now Internet base being self taught is the worst thing in the world but i am trying to make a go of it as i have customers out there and no customers that are requesting stuff i haven’t done before

i appreciate the time you’ve took to help me out and can understand it cant be easy

    thanks peter

    thanks for your honest reply.
first thing to do start referring to yourself a sign maker, not a sign writer.
Next thing, post an avitar on the boards, and do a a little resume of yourself in the say hello forum (if you have already done so, sorry, if I missed it)The next thing I would do, would be to pay for full membership to the boards, so you can access all the tutorials, file swapping etc.

    (I don’t get a commission btw)

But if you want to move forward, you will find it the best value for money you will spend.

Many people will help, and the board members, in general, will help those who genuinely want to get on,
but we are a bit of a community, and as such, like to get to know who we are helping or even asking for help from.

If you were called Susan, and had a nice pic, you would get more responses,( sorry now I am being sarcy)

But bear with us you will find the more you post, the more help you will get.
