    Jon….

Insurance rates generally are coming down but you still need to negotiate hard to get the best deal.

Last year my Norwich Union premium was £11,500 and at renewal time last month they said that for this year it would come down to £10,000. I got another price from AXA Direct and they came in at £7,500.

When I told the Norwich Union they immediately dropped their quote to £7,000 but I told them to stick it on the grounds that I couldn’t have confidence in a company that attempted to rip me off for £3,000 and that I would be happier paying slightly more to AXA who came in with their best price from the start.

I should stress that during all negotiations I went to great lengths to make sure that I was getting the same cover and was comparing like for like. I think I have done that, but I am more happy with AXA’s policy wording as it makes it much clearer exactly what I am covered for.

So, my result was that I am paying £500 more than I need have done but am still saving £4,000 over what I paid last year and am happier with the policy.

my only insurance is public liability (£250 for £2m cover + 50 man days for a temp worker if needed), i cant insure my workshop cos its not a commercial premesis, so i try the house insurance, they wont insure cos its got business equipment in it… grrrrrr (hot) so my insurance there is an alarm, a decent lock, and something very hard n heavy will smack you in the face if you dont lock it before opening the door, keeps the kids out too !!!

    Hi Jon,

Used various agents for insurance over the years but saved lots of cash since buying ‘offshore’. Try Rossboroughs in Guernsey. Telephone 01481 241508 (Sharon’s direct line).
