I’ve searched around on here for ages and all i can find are references to "site" boards… so was wondering if anyone could answer or provide an opinion on the following for me 😳

As I’m just starting out (I’m still in full time employment) – I’m in no rush and thought about doing Builders / Tradesmen’s advertising boards to start with (the ones you see outside peoples houses etc when they have the "men" in.

Now i know (before i get jumped on :lol1: ) that business is very limited to just this but I’m only starting out and even if it’s only 1 customer a month that’s fine – it’s a gentle starter to get my confidence up dealing with "joe public" and their "work".

It will mean i can do all the work at my own premises (no comings and goings of vans etc etc… YET).

Interested in if you think this is a good plan / starting environment ?
and so all this leads on to my big Q……

which substrate would you choose for these types of boards ? – an all in one board or a cheaper board and i fit it to a piece of marine ply ?

sorry for the long post 😳

    cheers
    Frank.

We use Dibond or 10mm Foamex.

What I call site boards, we make out of 5 or 10mm correx, most builders are not willing to pay much for them, so I only do a minimum of 6.
if I can talk them into having one decent board, with a frame etc, its a bonus.
I think if you can get more than £15 each for a basic design, on a 610×813 board you are doing well.

    thanks once again Peter 😀

I will have no problems on minimum numbers as obviously I’m not making a living from this (yet) – so thought as long as i keep people happy i can at least build up a client base whilst doing all these little jobs for people..

does it sound the right way to go about things to you ?

I appreciate 99% of people on here make their prime living from Signs but we all have to start somewhere..

    I agree with Peter.
Standard 610 x 813mm correx boards around £15 each for half a dozen. We charge a bit more if they want to add a logo. We do a fair number of these boards, but not enough to get rich on. We normally pick this type of work up after we’ve done their van graphics.

    that’s cool… I’m doing it in reverse :lol1:
thanks for the confirmation on what substrates to use 😀

Oh and Peter – just to keep you happy – I’ve sent my Mugshot photo off to Robert. I should be "visible" soon 😎

Frank, you may have trouble picking work up this way, like Alan has said once you have done a bit of work for someone it is easier to pick up other jobs but as you are not going to be doing this as a way to make a living to start with it can’t do any harm to give it a try.
Just don’t make the mistake of being to cheap as you are not relying on the money for living on because it will come back to haunt you latter on if you decide to go full time and suddenly have to put your prices up alot. I made the mistake of being to cheap when I started thinking once I got some customers under my belt I could put my prices up only to find that I ended up with all the wrong customers, all those that wanted everything for next to nothing and as soon as I started to charge a bit more they all disappeared !!!!

I hear you loud and clear Martin 😎 – and agree with everything you say there…. There’s no way I’d want to undercut people just to get business as it’s a false economy in the long run.

I’d rather have 1 customer paying the going rate each month, than 5 all paying cut price – because as i say I’m only starting out and have the benefit of another income.

I want to start properly 1st time and not "cut corners" and come "unstuck" :lol1:

*sorry that was terrible but you know what i mean 😎
