  • Bubble Free Vinyl causing liquid bubbles on vehicle magnets?

Posted by DominicMartin on 20 July 2012 at 13:48

    Hi
We have completed a large job on Vehicle Grade .85 Magnetic Sheet (which we have used previously) but have used Metascape MD3 Bubble Free Vinyl the customer has now returned as all the magnets have developed bubbles which when pierced have liquid underneath (mainly from the magnets on the sides of the vehicles and more so at the top of the magnets)
Has anyone experienced this before or any idea why this has occured?
Would appreciate any advice / ideas?

    interesting
this morning customer rang to ask what he had done wrong with his new ones, as they have bubbles now showing.
not the same vinyl as you but where did the mag sheet come from.
this make is new to us but not had this before

We have contacted Metamark and they are investigating but they don’t appear to know – like said we have been using the magnet for years (with Avery and Mac-tac vinyls without any such comebacks)

Our magnet is from Anchor Magnets (and we have been using it a while – will contact them as well though in case it is a bad batch)

i know you say your using bubble free vinyl, but did you apply these dry or wet?

if dry, and i know this may sound daft, but… depending on the film and how its been applied. water could seep down the back of the film the say way air can be forced out the sides of the film. this means that pockets of water may form behind the film in the cavity of the air release chanels are.

on closer examination when we remove the vinyl the bubbles appear to be between the magnet and it’s white covering and when I pierce a bubble a clear fluid is present not air, is this a form of gassing off and where does the fluid come from ???

obviously i am completely guessing here and doing this blind, but sounds like the film on the magnetic is de-laminating and allowing water to seep down the back like i have said, but with the vinyl.
i have seen this happen on our own work when we have laminated prints too early before the out-gas. hence why i am saying this.

alternatively, maybe the magnet firm applying the film using a fluid and this is the outcome? i wouldn’t imagine so though…
its difficult to tell without seeing it first hand but doesn’t sound like the norm at all.

We have been applying the vinyls dry and haven’t experienced this before (which is why we are quite concerned for future jobs)

I’ve seen this happen quite a number of times over the last few years – the water/bubble is between the brown magnetic and the white face supplied by the manufacturer – I’d suspect a manufacturing issue (but getting anyone to hold up their hands is another issue!)

i know with some airflow materials, you do have to heat the material so the air channels close

We have actually had feedback from Anchor Magnets – they believe it was a faulty batch of magnetic and say they have seen it happen once before – they have been great about it and are re-supplying replacements (+ extra) Thanks for all the feedback and ideas it has beenreally helpful

well done to Anchor Magnets for holding their hands up to it. we all get problems arising with our products at some point or another. its how we deal with it that makes us that bit more professional. 😀

thanks for coming back and letting us know Dominic.

Sure someone once told me that you aren’t suppose to completely cover the magnetic material if it has a face film like the white on it already.
I don’t know if that is true or not & know people do it all the time but I buy most of my magnetic sheeting with a plain face.
It’s a bit cheaper buying it that way as well which is a bit of a bonus :lol1: :lol1:
