Any idea what would cause this type of failure in nylon locators?

Each one has split along it’s entire length causing letters to fall off. The sign was put up about 18 months ago so not enough time for the nylon to become brittle and crumble.

I would like to get to the bottom of this to prevent recurring problems of this nature

    Nasty – and surprising!

Big letters? sufficient locaters for windage/movement?
    Usual supplier?
    Have they changed their maker/brand?
Used the studs and cups from the same manufacturer?
Screws – pan head or csk? (correct size – not too large head?)
Assuming they were located on a vertical surface. Otherwise could it be possible that they gathered water that froze and expanded?

Just the fairly obvious things that would come to mind – no doubt you’ve considered them already. First thoughts would be product quality, but I’d have thought the technical spec for these things would be well and truly established by now (unless you get them for different climates?)

Have you checked the other letters Phill to see if the same sort of thing is happening to any of the other locators?

as well as all the things Neil has mentioned the screws weren’t overtightened at all.

Are the male bits matched to the female bits.

They might be a tag too large……..

Phill, I have found this is getting pretty common…
personally i have put it down to inferior made versions of locators.

Snap-fix give a warranty i think over their locators. might be worth considering?

    Phil,

I was asked to re-fit some letters a while back and practically every letter had locators suffering with that problem, I put in down to U.V. light which hardens the material. Some of the ones I replaced crumbled like dry biscuit, all were about 3 years old.

I had the exact same propblem a few weeks ago. As Phil replied to that thread you should know what happened. The screws I used were just a tad and I mean just a tad to big to sit properly in the bottom of the cup. Every single one of them failed as per your picture. After spending hours running around to find these very small screws I ended up admitting defeat and had to fork out £23 to get the right screws from the fixing supplier.
Phil you have not said how big the cups are? mine were the smallest you can buy hence the scaresity of the screws.

These are small cups – but not the smallest you can get. I did suspect the screws just as you have suggested but these were a loose fit in the cups so I’m pretty sure they didn’t cause the problem. I went back yesterday and checked all of the other letters on the sign to discover they were all affected the same way and ended up replacing almost every single fixing. Still don’t know the cause and a bit concerned because I’ve done a fair number of signs using the same brand of fixing.
