Thousands of signs are set to be removed from Leicester’s roads – including those that welcome motorists to Britain’s First Environment City. It is part of a £115,000 scheme called Legible Leicester that aims to cut down street clutter caused by an accumulation of superfluous signs over the years. City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said he wants to replace the environment city boundary signs and is "attracted by the idea that demonstrates Leicester’s historic significance" following the discovery of the bones of Richard III. The existing Environment City signs, which have be in place since 2000, will be removed over the next few months.

Sir Peter said: "The signs themselves have been there for decades and are looking tired so we will replace them." "I will look at a number of designs. I don’t mind saying that I have been impressed with the signs Charnwood has had put on its borders." "They include features like Old John." "And if it’s good enough for Charnwood it’s good enough for Leicester." Leicester was designated Britain’s first Environment City by the Royal Society for Nature Conservation, Civic Trust, and UK in 2000 in recognition of work it had done promoting green spaces, sustainability and recycling. Sir Peter insisted he was still committed to environmental matters despite taking the old signs down. Leicester Civic Society chairman Stuart Bailey said he was pleased the Environment City signs were being removed.

He said: "They belong in a museum not on the edge of our city." The council says there are 4,889 illuminated signs – Give Way signs, One Way arrows and so on in the city and 3,469 non-illuminated signs largely giving directions. There are thousands of smaller sign plates, like the ‘No Waiting’, ‘No Stopping’ or ‘No Parking’ signs). A council spokeswoman said: "We estimate that the Legible Leicester programme will reduce the number of signs cluttering the streets by around 10 to 20 per cent."
