Hi guys, i wonder if you can give me your thoughts on how you would achieve 3d lettering in finland where temps in winter can get down to -35c.

So for a while now i have been scratching my head as to achieving 3d acylic/foamex lettering onto walls or sign trays. Would any adhesive be guarenteed? or would it have to be a fixing?

ive been looking at tensol 70, but none of the specs state a temp it would fail at.

Also locator wise, im sure the plastic one will become brittle and snap and the bass/metal ones with internal thread ive always found a nightmare to lineup and attach.

Now one way i know they do fix stainless letters out here is with metal studs welded to the back and they simply drill into the wall (tight fit) insert letters with no adhesive! so they can be pulled out. Seems risky to me when letters are 30m in the air.

So would the only way of achieving a 3d tray sign for example be to have acrylic letters with 40mm studs on the back, place onto pan and nut onto the rear. Still the threads need to be attached to the acrylic with adhesive

    Thanks

    As you have said,

A threaded rod with a nut on the thread is fed through the hole in the composite, and a second nut tightened onto the rear of the thread.

Obviously your “not” talking about a metal letter. so, if the threaded rod is then attaching to the letter, you could use a Big-Head fixing?

Basically, the base of the bighead is a perforated metal plate.
You squired a strong adhesive blob on the letter. press the big head into the liquid and the adhesive squirts through the holes.
you leave it to solidify and you now have an anchor point for the threaded rod.

Bigheads come in loads of shapes and sizes, with different fixing types.
so you can buy ready-made bigheads complete with threaded rods.
Or you can buy JUST the bighead plates with a small nut fastened to them. this means you can screen in your own rods at different lengths if you wish.

I may have got your message all wrong, so excuse me if i have went on on one and its completely wrong! 😀

    Thanks, Rob!!
You are right on the money.

    What adhesive would you use?
guessing not Tensol 70, maybe a no-nails type of thick silicone I’m guessing?

    Hi Martyn,

I’m not sure what sort of letters are you talking about but we, as all types of 3d letter supplier, stay away from sticking anything for outdoor. No matter what material is. For us, even the best adhesive has no guarantee of the letters falling down one day.

You are right about the plastic locators in cold weather, and as for the threaded brass/metal fixings, it’s exactly how described.

We use a different system, easy & cheaper, and strong.. Have a look at this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwdDj2pY4x8&t=1s

If you think this is something you can use and good for you, let me know I can help you with that.

    Kiitos 🙂

Hi Erdy, thats exactly what ive been concerned about. Letters im talking about are foamex, acrylic mainly. So your system is partly made up on the back of the letters so they insert into eachother.

we use for foamex as well. You just need to tighten the bolt with nuts on each side of foamex then use the rods in the video..
