Harry, i have a great idea! you could buy a boat and keep it here and i will (ahem) look after it for you!! When we apply the vinyl we don’t use backing as we found when its backed it struggles to do the bends and curves, so not sure how we could leave together and peel away afterwards? Must say do love working on boats, but would rather be cruising on one!

I havnt done a lot of boats, but quite a lot of stripes on vehicles.
I do like Harry has suggested, leave the two stripes together, I weed before applying low tac app tape, it seams to conform a bit better. If I need to run paralel to a swage line, I leave the stripes in a box with the gap to the swage line, and cut the app tape to this then easy to keep parallel if you understand what I mean.
Works for me, and even though it wastes some material I can fit quicker.
If you need to fit a second stripe parallel with the first you can us the same principal

Clear app tape is more flexible but there’s a problem with temperature as it grows and shrinks more than the backing paper, so it may not work on such long lengths.
Do you do the stripes in one length for the longest section?

Maybe you could cut stripes from temp vinyl in the gap width, then after applying the first stripe you can apply the temp vinyl as a guide?

we found that backing tape would just not do it! we tried paper and clear, as the boat curves out and around and up and down (if that makes sense!).
we measured a set distance following the curves and applied the first line to that mark, then applied a blue low tack masking tape 2cm wide over the initial line to give us the gap to apply the second line! But we spent loads of time peeling off and adjusting, and felt throughout the whole job it could have finished looking great or it could have finished looking terrible! i guess we will get better with time!

Peter maybe I’m not understanding correctly but i can see how that system works on straight lines but how do you cut the backing to the shape of the curves?

steve, we tried to do the long lengths in one section, and eventually went for 1.50m lengths, on the blue hull yacht we applied in one length.

the way i would do it is, apply bottom stripe first, then apply small 2cmxwhatever height margin you want to achieve, then using these random vinyl blocks apply the other strip on top usng the blocks to accurately keep the space. 😀
