    Hi everyone

Thought I’d share this with you. The customer needed to have her boat re-painted, could not afford to have it sign-written (sorry, all you traditional sign-writers) and so gave me the challenge of reproducing everything.

The originals were about 15 years old, and were a wee bit faded. I doubt if the vinyls will last that long tho’…..

    It looks Great Lorraine.

Just out of interest, what do people charge to do the traditional hand painted work on narrowboats like this these days ?

    Cheryl 🙂

I’m pretty picky, and I do like how you’ve managed to nearly duplicate the hand lettering.
I think you’re right about the paint outlasting the vinyl tho.
This is what I like to see, vinyl that doesn’t look like “stickers”.
    Love….Jill

Apologies for the poor qualityof my pics-camera now replaced for a slightly newer model!

I had photo’s only to work from, and this was my first major job. I spent an age hand-drawing a lot of the pictures, laying text & designs over the pictures to get them to match. I was pretty close most of the time.

I also had to match up the colours, coz they wanted everything reproduced as exactly as possible.

Needless to say, as I had only been a sign maker for about 6 months at the time, it took me a lot longer then than it would now perhaps!!!

However, it was invaluable experience, and a job that I am still pleased with, even allowing for the mistakes which I can see now, which I was too inexperienced to see then 😀

    Hi Kev

digitised most. the snakes (there are 2 types) were the most difficult, (or maybe it was the ‘rosette’ actually) cos they didn’t trace brilliantly due to picture quality.

    Jayne
Good luck with your boat-hope it’s not too hot!!

Do many narrow boats get vinyled?

Reproducing somebody else’s work can be a nightmare
Sometimes better to start from scratch with a new design

But here you show that you’re quite talented in emulating the original
    Well done Lorraine

I sometimes digitised work and thought to myself it would be quicker just to get my brushes out and lick it in – The only reason I don’t is the fact that once digitalised it there forever to blow up to any size you want

Great work Lorraine – Its looks like the real thing

Thanks John – praise indeed 😀

You’re right about it staying forever (on the comp) of course – customer was so pleased she had her wheelcover done with the name/snake (hatch)
    after 😀 😀 😀

excellent reproduction, i’m still loking at the pic of the rossette and trying to figure how ya did it !!
i find alot of these designs are easier to do than they look, but the initial working out can take ages on something like that, when i redraw something i’m forever messing with different ways of layering it,

    the lass done good !

    Hugh, thanks.

I think the worst bit was getting the gaps and joins sized correctly, and also the shadows on the anvil-for such a small detail it was mighty fiddly!

You should see my on-screen ‘cutting board’, where I’ve seperated all the colours out for cutting. I wish I had known about Robs ‘registration lines’ then – layering would have been a doddle (!)

For a job done only 6 months in the job I reckon that’s magic.

For a job done 6 years in the business I reckon that’d be magic.

    😀

Great work Lorraine, really nice … as Jill said I like how you’ve managed to nearly duplicate the hand lettering.

Thanks for showing us your work and look forward to seeing more!!

Thanks all for your positive comments, it is really rewarding to have something praised by those who know what they are talking about :thanks2:

As for the lettering-I could’nt find the exact font, so had to agree on a close match! In fact I think the ‘Blackadder’ was the only bit not hand-drawn, even the number ‘1’ had to have little cut-outs inserted

    😕

Been doing narrow boats on and off for 15 years or so and they get the thumbs up from me. Fact is I use vinyl myself now n again when the design warrants it.
