Board Question
Posted by MarkB on 22 November 2005 at 21:02Hi,
What is the best product to use for a 1000mm x 500mm business signboard, the sign is predominately white so a solid perpex would be best me thinks but where from and at what price?.
TIA

Hi mark you may be better off with dybond/alucoulor , but then it all depends where you want to put it , and put on it and how much you want to spend.
sweet baby by the way.Lynn

Id go with what Lyn says, Id use dibond or Alupanel rather then perspex.

As Lyn has said, it does depend on a few things as to the best material to use.
Is it internal or external?
Are you on a budget?
Is it to be wall fixed (if so in trim or not) or is it to be freestanding on posts?
Can the local toe rags get at it?
just a few questions to answer before anyone gives you a definite answer

Hi,
It’s external and a standard business style board fixed above a door/entrance, I thought perpex was the better material as perparing the edges would suffice as a finished job rather than a frame, budget wise I just wanted a ball-park figure as I really don’t know were to get anything from yet!.
thanks for replying

some thoughts about perspex it is expensive and can be damaged quite easily with a stone etc. where as diabond or alternatve is sturdy, if can be fixed without a frame, or you can form a tray type sign with it , or you can buy adeshive frame to fit on it.

Hi Lynn
How would you go about making a tray with Dibond?
I have my own ideas, but seems a bit fiddly 😕
I’d agree with Dibond/Alubond/Leboard type material- gives a much nicer finish than foamalux type.

Lorraine, Peter makes the trays by routing a groove through one side almost to the ally layer on the other, it is then easy to fold. Rich Uraquart (spelling)?did some pics a while back.
And the other way I have just seen is to by an extrusion from from smp
it comes in 50mm and 100mm. it just fits round the edge, havnt tried it yet, but we are getting a sample -
Cheers Lynn, I’ve just emailed them! They are only 20 miles or so from me!
-
Lyn,
I’ve just had a look at that link for the tray returns – I would be very interested to hear your thoughts when you get the sample.
Thanks in advance.

We got the sample this morning from SMP. it seems to be exactly what it says on the tin. Smp only sent a 150mm sample so cant really test it, but the extrusion seems ok and Next time I need a tray I will give it a try,
Has anybody else used this product?
Peter -
We have used the SMP lengths of frames for several jobs now including an illuminated oval and it is a very good product. They suggest using a 3M D/sided tape to fix to the substrate but we also use a 2 pack glue just to be sure of a good bond. It mitres nicely and has a slightly rounded lip which makes for a nice finish.
Give it a try… 😀
Best wishes
Alex
