• Blocking pop-ups

Posted by Phill Fenton on March 27, 2004 at 10:09 pm

Does any one know how I can block the instant messages I receive when browsing using a PC running windows xp. I get instant spam messages every minute or so when browing using my lapop which runs under xp. I usually browse using another pc which runs with windows 98 and on this PC I don’t get this problem at all. So I’m guessing that the problem must be caused by a feature built in to XP

download ad-aware 6.0 and run it once a week. only takes a few mins for a system scan. shows up all those ad softwares that download into your comp when you dont know. just click and delete them all..
these types of ad-spammers slow down your net connection also because they are sending info to their own server while you browse. 😕
i loaded it onto the comp we have at work a few weeks ago. showed up 25 different programes running.

Also load a free program called pop up stopper

it stops 95% of pop ups, downside is if you open a link that needs another window u have to turn it off quickly, but then u just restart it.

    http://www.panicware.com

but u def need to scan for adware, the program Rob uses is good but i find this one much beter

    http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=home

    again it’s a free program

Another way is to stop Java and activeX in security settings of IE, I think its those two settings that allows pop ups to happen. Go to Tools, Internet Options, Security, Custom Level and disable the controls.
Can be a pain if you use websites that need ActivX like Autotrader and other datadase driven websites. Also a good idea to block cookies too, again you need to allow cookies when banking and other secure sites.

    Cheers

I think Phill may mean the messenger instant messages that pop up from the bottom corner usually containing porn links?
and not the pop up web browsing advertisement ones?

There is a HUGE difference between the Messenger service in Windows XP, 2000, and NT and Windows Messenger, which is essentially Windows XP’s version of MSN Messenger. The problem Phill was having was with the Messenger Service which, as stated above, has been utilized by advertising companies to give SPAM popups in unprotected computers.

Disable messenger from add/remove programs in control panel
or found this, I don’t have messenger enabled but I did and remember
    something similar to below

Windows Messenger, which is the icon found on the task bar, can be deleted by following this procedure:

Thank you – I followed the procedure described in your link above and this has eliminated the pop-ups. This procedure was also covered in the link supplied by Nik – I had tried this initially but had inadvertantly faileld to complete the process so the problem had continued.

The bottom line is I need to install a firewall to block out all the nasties that could be accessing my computers hard drive without me even knowing about it.

Thank you to everyone for their valued contribution and advice

This link also covers the procedure to go through to switch it off – thanks Nik 😀

The pop up you are seeing has nothing to do with pop ups as such.

If you get service pack 1 and other updates for windows this should stop.
You are recieving this thru the messenger service ( Nothing to do with windows messenger.)

If you haven’t done so already

Go to START > RUN Type services.msc a window will appear with all the local services listed on your PC and what state they are at ie running, manual or disabled etc

Scroll down to one called messenger right click once withthe mouse and select properties and select the start up type and set it to disabled and apply. This will stop these pop ups that you get just It has been on the go for years but until XP not a lot of people used windows NT based programes it doesn’t affect 98, me etc.

(when your computer starts up some of these run automatically because they have been told to do so here you are telling it not to start when the computer starts basically)

I hope this explains what you have been getting as I said these are not the normal pop ups you get while surfing the net.

    Phil,

I know you use AOL as a service provider, and i think you use version 5??

The new version 9 has some vastly improved features, including spam filter, Email virus scanning, firewall, pop up blocker etc…..

You might want to consider upgrading
