Black Vinyl Nightmare !!
Posted by Katrina Gattrell on 19 June 2010 at 08:21Hi there everyone,
Is anyone able to help I have a Signpal Lynx S-60 Plotter and it is working fine apart from when I use black vinyl. When I put the vinyl in the print head runs back to the start and then stops, I have to turn the power off then back on for the print head to return to the start position. Even after I have done that 80% of the time it ends up not finishing the job that was sent to the plotter, it just stops and occasionally the printer head runs back to the start and freezes again.
I have previously sent the vinyl back to Target Transfer and they have found no fault with it I have had more than one roll and the plotter is doing the same with them too.
It’s only on the black vinyl – any ideas before I end up kicking my machine out of frustration……

my graphtec is colour blind so it carnt tell whats in it. 😛
seriously tho, dont you just set the plotter to measure the width/lenght/sheet of vinyl, dont know your cutter but has it some sort of optical eye ! if so can it be turned off as that may be confusing it.
so if you cut a vector in red and cut the same vector but in black it plays up ! got to be optical sensor as the roll grippers carnt see colour 🙄
what software you using. -
Alan is probably right, but as you say it don’t finish sometimes could be that the vinyl is lifting behind the pinch rollers where there is usually a eye to see if you have run out of vinyl.
the rear media sensor can be covered by a bit of tape, but it won’t then switch off if you run out of vinyl, whilst you are not looking.

Have you tried changing the black on the screen to another colour
then send to the plotter could be that the software is set up for black
as a contour cut…just an idea -
The Lynx 60 does not have an optical eye, you say Target and Black vinyl, would it be textile vinyl by any chance, if so the protective layer on the material can because it is upside down compared to normal vinyl reflect light back into the Lynx’s light sensor.
If this is the material and problem the I would drop some tape over the sensors to block the light out.

Thanks for all the advice, I will try covering the sensor with a bit of tape to see if this helps..
Hopefully this will work 😕

sometimes the position of the plotter near a light source, a window for example will cause the plotter to not work 100 percent! we had to move ours from near a window as the afternoon light was causing the sensor to playup and we couldn’t work out what was going on! finally figured it out and moved the plotter a few feet away form the window, works perfect now. seems like a sensor/light issue to be honest.

Thanks Matt, but they have me working in a back office without any windows. I’m just about to try covering the sensor up so wish me luck..

Unfortunately covering the sensor did not help, it stopped cutting as usual.. Is there anything else I can try.. 😥 😥

Its econofilm that I am using..

Hello Katrina,
This has got me stumped !
Have you tried cutting a black matt and gloss self adhesive vinyl?jeremy
-
Hi Jeremy,
I only have econofilm in stock as I only tend to print Tees & Hoodies up. It is really annoying as I have an order of about 700 Tees that I need to do..
-
This is a very odd problem. My only thought is that there should be two sensors on the machine one on the front and one on the rear – make sure you have covered them both.
-
Hi Phill
I have checked the machine and just found the 2nd sensor I have had the machine 8 years and have never noticed that before…
I will try covering that one and have another go, thanks for all the advice I am being given it’s much appreciated

Cover the BACK one in something white though…and just be aware that the auto feed might get a bit stuffed up if you cover the front load sensor as it won’t know when to stop ‘reversing’ the vinyl back.

Hi Phill
I am sending you a virtual "Big Kiss" at the moment it is printing :lol1:
Fingers crossed that this will solve the problem
Thanks x
