The service in itself is 100% legal. Limewire, Bearshare, Kazza…all variations on a theme.
BUT, 99.99999% of the files being shared are being done so illegally.
eg. If YOU made a file, program, logo or CD demo track and posted it for others to access via you ‘shared folder’ on your PC…totally fine. If though you fancy the latest cracked version of some £3000 software both the uploader / sharer & the downloader are in breach of numerous piracy & copyright laws.
Procecutions vary…some for downloading 1000’s of DVD’s others for sharing illegal copies of Microsoft (usually) software.
Besides being ‘iffy’ at best, it can open up your PC to various malicious attacks and virus infested files…
Me, I go absolutely NUTS at anybody I find with Limewire etc on their work PC…I’ve enough problems with barely competent users without having to cleanup PCs on a Monday morning (they got bored at the weekend). 👿
