Best Way of Mounting A Sign 100mm away from Wall?
Posted by Tom Robinson on 21 September 2012 at 11:45Hi All,
I’m doing a Job in a couple of weeks for a shop which includes a sign above 2 windows and a door which have external Roller Shutters over them.
They’ve got an existing sign against the wall at the moment but its impossible to see from 6ft in front of the shop and they have asked if it is possible to bring it out by around 100 mm to help this.
I can’t put the sign any higher there is a flat above the shop.
So just looking for suggestions on the best way to achieve this, I’ve not done anything like it before, closest I’ve done is mounting smaller signs onto 1" Plinths!
Just wondering if there are any tips & tricks for doing this? Or is it as simple as a block into the wall and mount to the block?
Thanks In Advance,

a picture of the job would help answer the question but going in blind i would say construct a timber frame to clad with composite or similar 😀

Think we would need to know the make up of the sign to help answer you, sign tray, letters?
The more info you can give I am sure we can all advise better for you.

Thats what I was thinking, just wasn’t sure if there was anything special that I had missed.
I haven’t got any photo’s to hand, but attached a quick diagram to show what I mean.

Meant to put this in the first post! Its a perspex board covered with Matt Vinyl and laminated so nothing too heavy really. The sign itself is 3000mm x 510mm but splitting it into two boards to make working with it easier.

The only bit I can help or make a comment on is re cutting this panel into two, just be very aware re expansion and contraction on acrylic as if mounted in two sections butted up together initially they may well be up to 5mm apart next time you look – I am only advising as one of my clients had advised me on this. I dont do fitting work personally but have heard this a few times. 😕
Am sure others will best advise on the fitting of the 100mm off wall far better than I.
Good luck with your install.

Thank you for the advice, I have put the join away from any text and may well make the join intentional to account for this.

Have you already made the sign for them? If not then a composite tray with 100mm returns will do the job & look good as well. If you have already made the sign up Acrylic should really be mounted in a frame where it has room to expand & contract but that means building something like a timber frame as John suggested & then mounting the sign frame to that. If you are going to just build a frame faced with something like far eastern ply & then fit the panels directly to that then make sure you oversize any fixing holes through the acrylic face to allow for expansion, if it is already done did you router the edges of the acrylic panel where they meet??

Hi Martin,
No I haven’t made up the sign as yet, so composite tray would be an option. I’ll make a few calls Tomorrow/Monday to see how costs compare.
If I do go down the acrylic route, how is the board routed differently when the boards meet? I don’t cut boards to size in house as I don’t have the equiptment so my supplier cuts the boards to size, but I do have router table which I use for rounding edges.
Thanks,

The panel if spilt in two would need rebating. This helps with the joint expanding/contracting, within a frame also does finish it off nicely. If asking for a composite tray drop your size slightly so can be made from 1 sheet routered and folded. If you ask for it to be made from one sheet suppliers will advise what size you can have.

Why are you specifying perspex for this? And why laminate vinyl (or did you mean to say it was an illuminated sign)?

Hi Phill,
Cost Mainly, I get my perspex sheets at a cost where its not really worth going for something like corex.
+ I’m laminating this job as the vinyl is Matt with some dark colours included and from experience, dark matt colours and bird droppings don’t mix well, seems to mark quite easily and the Laminate just helps to protect it.

we have in the past made a timber frame up above the rollers and put a dibond panel over that and the roller shutter.

Tom, not sure if I have picked this up right, if you are buying acrylic sheet at a cost not much above correx sheet does it not shatter when it falls off the back of the lorry :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:
You have a few different options now so you could offer the customer a couple of different options depending on their budget. Good point made by Sam about the size if going down the composite route, unless you go with something like dibond which is generally a lot more expensive than other makes of composite the max board length is about 3 metres which means either shortening it a bit or using 2 boards to make with a lot of waste/extra material.
The option with a wooden frame faced with composite would allow you to use one sheet of composite. Does it need to have a matt finish? If it does why don’t you just use normal gloss vinyl with a clear matt vinyl/laminate over the top? Saves you buying in Matt vinyl you may not use again unless it is something you use a lot anyway.

Just very friendly thats all 😀 Let me use offcuts that customers aren’t interest in, they have silly sizes that I’d normally pay £100+ that a customer has essentially already paid for but has no use for it so doesn’t take it. And as I don’t do That many large signs they’re happy to let me use them 🙂
I’ve not got any problems with making it slightly shorter which I may do, I’m just looking at the frame and mounting options as we speak. I Think a tray is going to be too expensive for what the customer is willing to pay. But only managed to get one price so far, not many people work Saturdays apparently!
I’ve already got the matt vinyl in, I use a certain vinyl company in Tamworth and as I pick it up from the trade counter – I pass it every day on the way to my unit which is handy! – They’re happy to let me order to the nearest meter anyway so I only ever order what I need.
