  • Best method to attach Foamex letters to Dibond

Posted by Warren Beard on 6 November 2007 at 18:04

    Hi All

Customer wants Dibond tray with 19mm flat cut white foamex letters attached directly to the face of the tray. What is the best method to attach?

    Glue (what type?)
    or
    VHB tape (again what type?)

    (Letters are 177mm high)

    Thanks

    Warren

I would just use self tappers, pre-drill slightly oversize holes in the tray, and attach from the back, dont over tighten the screws, no need for glue or tape.

    quote Peter Normington:

    One could also say…

I would use 467MP (really thin), or 4950 (white closed cel) VHB tape. No need for pre-tapping or screws.

So it’s screws, glue or tape then 😕

At least I have many options. Customer has now gone with 10mm foamex so I think I might use evostick, any tips for using this method? should I score the surface or will a good clean with iso be good enough?

    cheers guys

If you want them NEVER EVER to come off, and have no need to recycle any part of the sign again.
    Use Evo stick serious stuff.
I put a safety bracket on a hanging sign I did today, I fixed it on with 4 screws with some evo stik on, I can tell you now that stuff wouldn’t budge with a sledge hammer, I actually needed to move the bracket to a location lower down due to a customer supplied hanging bracket being drilled in the wrong place, but I ended up having to redrill the bar rather than get the glued on bracket off.
Thanks Hugh for mentioning it, I hadn’t used it before, its on sale at focus now with 20% off too.

    Warren,
evostik would have been my weapon of choice , or ds tape, untill recently, had some foamex detatch , so I would opt for a mechanical fixture, in which case tape not needed,

    Blu-tac?
    Prit-stick?
    Bubble Gum?

    :lol1:

    nah, same as above…

I would make a template from cheap stencil vinyl.

Apply it to your Dibond face.

Drill 4-5mm holes near the top and lower end of each letter. but dont over do it. i.e. Letter T = 3 holes H = 4 holes I = 2 holes and so on…

Apply Tesa Tape to the rear of the letters. Its very cheap, very thin, strong and is a sorta transparent caramac coloured double sided tape, so easy hidden. (should be able to get it from the same places as you buy VHB or maybe even B&Q…

Now stick each letter in place using the template as guide.

Once done, flip the board face down and using something like half inch long threaded screws, screw through to the letter to secure.

    Job done… 😀

    Thanks guys

Think that might be the best option, I got evo stick serious stuff so maybe will use that otherwise will get in some more VHB tape and then screw through the back as suggested for that extra assurance.

    Thanks
