  • Begginer with VP-540 and problem with Color Calibration

Couple of days ago I got my self new Roland VP-540. Also I have ordered with it installation and setup. I also ordered some testing vinyls to learn on actually print jobs.

So I downloaded ICC profiles from MultiFix web site since I have their vinyl. But this profile is giving me prints were colors are vary pale and without any contrast or desaturated.

First I’m asking you if it is normal for Roland dealer that he just deliver plotter, makes first initialization, calibrating and short demonstration how does softwear looks. Or should he help me by the end with setting also proper ICC color profile so that at least colors are correct printed with vinyl that he supplied me.

It disturbed me, that after I have called him back and explained the issue that I would need help with making new or customize existing profile, that he is out of time and that actually he can’t help me. Also that in any case I will have to order service for creating custom ICC profile with hardware densitomer and spectrometer like Gretagmacbeth. I was shocked because he didn’t told me anything about this in front. So I called friend which is using dye plotter. He solved this without hardware measurement equipment in such matter that he just simply printed pictures with all ICC profiles and than picked one out which looked like the one he wanted.

In my case this is big problem because VersaWorks has 126 built in color profiles and it doesn’t allow nested job to have separated color profiles. But if I nest couple of jobs, all jobs will inherit settings from the top one. So I wanted to put jobs side by side (from left to right) with different color profiles for comparisment. But VersaWorks allows me only to setup jobs with different color in a column…one behind other…which means I will spent complete 50m of vinyl just to print 10% if it’s width.

So if anybody has some recommendation for beginner in plotter or advice I would be vary happy. So far I have given 5 days and nights for testing and spending a lot of reading on the Internet without major success.

How did you solve this with solvent plotter?

    Regards

Have you tried using Generic Vinyl I in versa works? I tend to use this profile alot.

Also if you want to print things side by side you can achieve it by setting the base point on the printer. So print your first job as normal. Then move the head using the printer controls besides that print and set the base point. You can then use the full width of your media. But like you said you will have to send each job through one at a time and it will be very time consuming.

My advice for now is try Generic Vinyl I in VersaWorks on the different quality settings and see if its any better.

I know for some types of media I have used the manufacturers profiles that I downloaded but they were shocking. On the other hand Generic Vinyl I on those medias were shocking. This was the case for Avery 1005 EZ RS I had to use the Avery specific profile or my colours were all over the shop.

Let us know how you go.

Thank you jxuereb for replying. I would like just to attach two pictures before going later doing some tests.

I have done yesterday test with quality profile and used default color profile and aligned picture by picture with function "base". No such difference from first 10 quality profiles:

So my question for you is what kind of affect will have if I choose different color profiles on actual print:

I couldn’t find an answer, neither in manual or Internet, which setting has precedence from other. You can set up setting for actual job and also on Que A or B it self. If I just under Que setting turn on printing marks, does that mean that all print jobs will have this marks or not? On this I’m confused….

Brrr…I hope I will manage to solve color calibration because I have already my own Que of customers waiting for car wrapping 🙂

    Thank you

    Hi Sasha

We had similar issues in the early days and like Jason found that Generic Vinyl 1 gave the best results..we now have a tailored profile and find that it works with almost everything..better than the manufacturers profiles
So find one that works and use it…later you will find better profiles from other users, helpful sales reps (yes there are a few around :lol1: ) and service technicians are a vast source of helpful info

    Happy printing

Change your Colour Management setting on the Quality screen to Sign & Display. Then start your tests again.

Also untick the Specify Profile and Ignore Default box.

Peter…your very simple advice is actually working and I just
can’t believe how close I was. My supplier told me explicitly that I must leave always on US pre-press and that this must stay as it is.

What a relief…now I can really start doing some real stuff.

    Thank you Peter…. :praise1: :thanks2:
