This is a banner I’ve been working on, its 16ft x 4ft with a print done on the PC60 (that went terribly wrong again and again 🙁 ) but here it is, done and complete. I had to lay it out on my lounge floor as I’ve divided my shop in two now to accomodate a bigger office, so I had nowhere big enough to take a piccy of it flat on the floor.

The job itself took me about 3 hours to apply, but obviously the whole print thing delayed the job, so its been catch up time with other work. After working for about 35 hours in 2 days, I’m a tad mullered, but I guess thats what happens when you work for yourself.

Anyway, enough of my whinging, all the vinyls are Bannerflex 451 from Oracal, and the banner supplied by General Banner (in record time I should add).

    Cheers, Dewi

ah yes, self employment; every employed persons dream, every self employed persons nightmare 😮

Good job Dewi, you should be proud of that! How do you find the Oracal banner material. I must confess that I usually use 551 for banner work. Never had a problem todate (touch wood) 🙄

I am doing a long stretch myself this weekend. Got 72 600×800 digital prints to print, lay and deliver by monday.

Excellent work Dewi, looks great!! We use the 451, good stuff 😀

We do on the rare occassions have a print not go to plan and it always seems to be on a big job that you need to get out in a hurry so as then be able to get on with the stacks of other work you have to do 👿 … all in good fun though!! 😛

    Great Job Dewi

Seems like you fed the whole lot through the printer
I know you were asking about doing this sometime ago
Did you have any problems – Sounds like you had a few mishaps but you pulled it through in the end

Like Terry: Is this all digital or a mixture?

Thanks for the comments 😀 The only bit of the banner that was printed is the white panel on the left hand side. This measured about 4ft x 18inches, but the problems with printing it, it just didn’t want to work at all. The first time it misaligned, the yellow was clearly visible, offset to the rest of the print. Then finally, once I’d managed a decent print, the roll jammed in the roll holder, dropped to the floor and dragged the print backwards through the PC60 whilst it was cutting! 😮 It made some unwanted cuts, and the roll is now damaged, but its done.

Nik, the banners are superb quality. They are hemmed evenly and have brass eyelets. The banner material itself is a dream to apply to, and as you say, it looks great. Website is http://www.generalbanner.co.uk and I think the blank banner was around £50 plus a few pounds added in VAT and delivery. Speedwise, I ordered it last thing Friday, it appeared with me first thing Tuesday morning. I know I can get a cheaper banner elsewhere, but the quality of the product, the fact that each one is made to order and delivered very quickly, they’d have my custom even if they raised their prices by 10%. 😀

As Robert suggested, I was running out of time with this job and I had other customers desperate for work to be done, so this is probably the most stressful job I have ever had to do. I had a couple of minor problems with communications with the company that didn’t help matters as well, but the relief when the job was done, wrapped and delivered was enormous. I’m gradually catching up after the mishaps now and my other customers seem happy enough that I’m back to normal, it’ll teach me to leave that bit more time to complete a job and ensure I have every single specification from the customers before I start the work.

    Cheers, Dewi

Nice banner, Dewi. How about a photo when it’s in place.

Nice one mate. For interest sake, did you use process or spot.

Its about 30 miles away Lee, but I should be out that way one weekend sooner or later, so I’ll grab a piccy of it 😀

Beepee, I used process colours for the print. The process of printing the individual colours, then the overprints causes many problems for me because I use the PC60 for large prints and the tracking isn’t great. Anything over a metre and the machine struggles with alignment, so you end up with a yellow or cyan border to your work 🙁 Printing in two halves is often the answer, which to be fair, Robert suggested to me, but as per usual I just went for it as one large print and I paid for it dearly 😕 The PC60 is a great machine for short run stickers etc which is what I use it for the majority of the time, but as I say, I can’t resist doing big prints.

Shane, sorry I missed this earlier, but with regards to 451, its brilliant to work with from my perspective. I haven’t had any problems with it at all, it seems to just apply so easily, I rarely get bubbles and I’ve never had a crease yet, despite some of the larger work I’ve done with it. I have done quite a few of the 16ft x 4ft banners for various companies, but I haven’t got anywhere to photograph them inside, and more often than not they’re due out the same day and off to some far flung region that I wouldn’t drive by unless I made a special journey. This is the first banner I’ve managed to grab a piccy of, simply because I had to take it home for delivery the following morning.

Thank you Jon 😀 You’re right, I should really have asked them to print it, the amount of time and effort it would have saved would have been worth the extra money. 😳 Mind you, I’ve always liked doing things the hard way, I’m the chap who decided it’d be a great idea to cut 2000 business cards down by hand, then laminate them with a pouch laminator and round all the corners by hand as well 😮 I had very sore fingers at the end of that little stint 😳

Keith is a star, I think mainly because he’s been a signmaker and he knows what customers can be like. I enjoy a good chat with him every time I place an order. I’ll have to ask him about his printed banners next time I call.

    Cheers, Dewi
