Banner edge folding
Posted by Allan Bendall on 29 June 2010 at 19:32Hi,
Being a newbie to all of this, i am looking for a quick and easy way to fold over the long edges of a banner.
Are there devices out there that will help doing this?
Cheers

you can use banner tape, most common, or you can use a hemming machine that sews up the banner edging, looks neater but you need to buy a machine to do it.

hi allan
the way i do it either put a pencil line along the fold or print a line
then fold to the line i run a hard wallpaper roller along the fold as i go to put a good crease in it. i hem with banner tape and fold over from the centre out done some big banners this way
hope this helpsderek

Same as Derek, I also try to print a mark for the eyelets as well.
It’s also handy to have a rule the same width as the fold X 2, so a 30mm hem needs a 60mm wide rule. This allows you to make the inside edge for folding to on the back and you don’t need to measure anything.Steve

Thanks for that, my main concern was to get a good straight crease. The roller sounds like a good idea. Combined with the banner tape, should produce a nice neat result.

I do mine exactly the same as Derek but been looking at the leister welder which can fold the hem and weld it, just can’t justify the cost for the amount I do.

I print a hairline for cutting the banner to the overall size before folding as well as eyelet positions (plus our details along the edge).
The banner is set oversize by the width of the tape – 25mm tape so 50 mm over.
Tape is set along the edge then folded over to the edge of the tape. Rollered down to press in a nice crease.
Always looks straight enough to me and very quick. -

Thanks for your feedback, but i fear i may not have the best edging tape.
As soon as i start rolling the banner around a tube for storage or transport the edges start cockling up and look very unsightly.Could anyone suggest some good edging tape please? and a supplier?
Many thanks

I stopped hemming ages ago, we just use clips instead of eyelets. never had a complaint yet, however there is a great instructional video in the members section by Rob…. it’s worth joining just for that!
