  • Avery MPI 1105 v’s 3M IJ180 to replace failed MDX

Posted by Richard James Martin on 28 September 2016 at 20:25

Quite possibly due to user error, too much ink, installed too soon after lamination, conditions too cold (installed February) , not enough instant post heat etc etc, the MDX is failing in areas around the recess on the side of some vivaros we did…….After various communications between our customer we are going to replace the side partial wrap sections in 3M or Avery.

I’ve done a fair amount of wrapping with the Avery supreme film and love it, no problems. I’m leaning toward Avery for that reason but 3M keeps cropping up, especially from the customer.

I can’t have this happen again so was hoping for some advice on these 2 top products and if one is better/preferred over the other?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Rich.

Hi Rich, Avery is my vinyl of choice, I’ve not used 3m due to the fact thats its so expensive but have heard its very good, not had any problems with Avery always very tricky wrapping in the cold something i avoid and yes post heat is very important……

We use avery supreme, and 3m for digital wraps, we have also used MDX for those on tighter budgets, but not the one with air channels as I wasn’t sure it’d last on recesses being stretched.

Hi David, do you use the IJ380 or 180? With or without comply?

Thanks Andy, do you use the Avery 1105 for the digital wraps? And if so, does it handle in the same way as the supreme coloured film?

IF…. like you say there is a list of probable reasons for your fail over it being the actual media. why not just do it in the same media but this time eliminate the production / installation errors?
No matter what media brand you use, if you do not follow the wrap process by the book then you may get the exact same failed result.

Avery digital is a good wrapping film and of the two, 3M or Avery i prefer Avery. I also like Arlon digital wrap.

As far as I am aware 380 & 180 are different vinyl for different applications. 380 is better suited to deep recesses like the sprinter double recess panels, 180 will do most shallow single step recesses, berlingo, vivaro type all day long. Yes we use control tack adhesive. Although we’ve also used MDX with great success too.

I need to look at the avery films I don’t know why I’ve never tried them.

We have been using the IJ380 for all our wraps for a few years until they just discontinued it here.. It cost a fair bit more than the 180 but it is a much more reliable film. Now there is the 480 but I havent tried it yet. Its meant to be even better.

This is a very valid point and to be honest it has knocked my confidence a bit but I need to put it right so going with a film of better quality and one that I know will be easier to install is the way I feel I need to go. I found with the MDX it has a fierce initial grab and did struggle with small pockets of air, especially in the recesses which on reflection may have been my downfall.

    I ordered Avery 1105 today.

different media means different colours, because other white colour of printvinyl and laminate…
I am very happy with the Orajet 3951GRA, has a very strong glue and I like this specially for Mercedes Sprinters with the deep recesses…

I have rather stronger glue, so it will stick even after little stretch! Changed from 3M onto Oracal, because the 3M is much more sensitive to surrounding temperature also!

    Hi Richard

How did you get on with avery 1105 I used it last weekend and found it a nightmare to laminate.

Anybody got any tips on using this laminate with a manual cold roll laminator. I found it was so thin it made it so easy to wrinkle etc even when it started off fine but by half way wrinkles starting to appear. I think it took about three attempts to get it right :shake:

I liked the way it went on and thought it was pretty easy to work with. (First time I’ve done a wrap of this size lol)

    Thanks
    Graeme

My preference is probably 3M but its because of my use of it. I have not had much experience with Avery print media but if it performs as well as Avery Supreme wrap film does then it will be awesome.

3M IJ180 – Used for 95% of printed jobs, needs to be applied in ambient temperatures of 18 degrees… awesome film but make sure you follow the post heating steps and for any recesses leave a bridge of a minimum 100mm before pushing it in.

3M IJ480 – Used for 5% of printed jobs… again an amazing film but it is trickier to fit and only needed for deep or double recesses, this needs to be fitted in ambient temperatures of 20 degrees +++ . You will find that you need to apply more pressure to stop any air bubbles in your final product. Also when bridging leave a gap of 200mm all around the recess and heat that whole 200mm section before fitting it into the recess.

In all films cleanliness is key. Preparation with the 3M Surface prep is needed for both of these films to hold any form of warranty with the manufacturer. They should not fail if you go over the correct methods of fitment
