Hi all. I did a few extra bits on a lorry cab today which i initially done last november.

I was shocked to see that the vinyl had failed (popped out) of the recess. 3 of the 4 parts on eagle, about an inch overall on each one. Struggling to understand why as it was indoors and had been for a week, 800 was used and it fitted just fine. Also post heated.

Also on the front header where this name is two of the letters are coming away and this is on a flat surface.

Now i know these get heavy use and heavy cleaning (normally with an industrial jetwasher and a broom) but still its far from acceptable and royally pissed me off.

Now thinking that i should use a wrap film instead of a good cast?

Picture is of the original, sorry was too annoyed to take a picture of the failure.

Did you feed it in, or stretch it in?

Personally I’d have fed the vinyl like you would if it were a polymeric, so there’s as little tension as possible in the film.

I’ve done a few Tractor Units, the vinyl usually fairs quite well considering the abuse they get.

No matter if its a cast or a calender vinyl…
Anywhere the vinyl can be fed in and out of a recess, it should be.
even if it cannot be fed in and out, there is specific methods of stretching that should be followed.
there are also specific heat procedures etc…
no all the above done 100% correct, you then must consider was it prepped, cleaned correct using the proper cleaning procedures. afterall, all it takes is some wax that you cannot feel or see in the recess areas and the lot will pop!
    :awkward:

the one good thing that will come from it mate is you will not make the same mistakes the next time. i too have won the t-shirt in every colour available over the years. 😉

Thanks chaps. There was too much tension as the top of the nose came down from the corner of the panel, therefore not allowing to feed in and the graphic could not be cut. The bottom part being seperate was cut and fed in tho.

If it was this panel only i would be 100% sure that i have over worked the material and maybe some of the the other points you made rob. However seeing issues on normal flat text also makes things a little fishy.

I have done a few cabs over the years and this is my first to have issues.

Its metallic so im not sure if its more likely to have issues?

Some extra info for those that are good at diagnosing failures, all the glue was attached to the vehicle, the vinyl had seperated itself from the adhesive.

A lot of truck companies especially ones that lease their motors still use steam cleaners turned right up and an inch from the paint as it saves them using a brush, destroys the paint but the motors are normally gone by that time.

Ive seen vinyl almost stripped off when it touches and especially if its new fit it can destroy it. May not be the case here but always worth having a smooch around when your fitting for a new client just to see what they use to wash the motors.

Cheers kev, i will look into it and ask them how they clean them. Problem is customers dont give a monkeys. They expect they can treat the vehicles how they want and the graphics should last.

Few months ago i was doing some graphics at a lorry firm, a driver was cleaning a cab which i had done less then 6 months ago with a jet washer that would take your head off and a stiff broom. I was cringing.

Im not blaming this fail on cleaing tho but you never know
