  • Asbestos suspected whilst fitting a sign!

Posted by Unknown Member on 18 May 2014 at 16:46

    Guys,

For the last couple of days we have been out on site fitting almost 75m of dibond tray signage.

The fitting and everything was going extremely smoothly and we couldn’t have asked for better weather…In fact a couple of us suspect we may have got heat stroke…lol

Anyway just as we were getting to the end of the job and the final 15m one of the lads spotted what looked like Asbestos…..

I immediately instructed my team to put down there tool and go no were near the location until we knew what the hell the material was as it involved us drilling and cutting directly through it.

I asked an asbestos officer to come out on site and check the material which he did and told me the results would be back on Monday.

The client we were working for assured us it wasn’t asbestos and the inspector also said that he was 60% sure it wouldn’t be positive but couldn’t confirm until tested.

My question is would you guys have taken the same precautions I did? or would you have gone off what the client had told you.

Obviously this has delayed the job and client isn’t happy….

What is your thoughts on this matter?

My question to the client would have been how did he know it wasn’t asbestos?

A cautious approach seems reasonable and adds only a couple of days to the fitting time (probably messing you up more than the client)

Making sure that the client is aware that it is you and not him who takes responsibility for the health of your fitters and anyone else exposed might make him/her a bit more reasonable, but I doubt it. Some folks are just . . . . 🙄

    Thanks for your feedback Paul….

Thats exactly what I said to him "How can you be sure its not asbestos?"

Don’t be silly James I’ve spent £100K on a refit in 1993 I don’t think any builder would have used asbestos was his reply…

Asbestos was banned in 1999 so your builder could have…

Anyhow it cost me £120.00 to get the asbestos guys out and I think thats a small price to pay to make sure your staff are well protected.

Sometime you have to be responsible. I’m expecting this to come back negative, and I can almost guess what his reply will be.

Anyone else been in a situation like this.

I think you should have just got on & finished the job, asbestos isn’t harmful to you at all. That’s what they told me when I was in the Royal Navy & use to remove asbestos pipe lagging, must be true because the MOD wouldn’t tell porkies would they !!!

fair play to you James £120 is a small price to sleep easy at night – telling the client of the delay is another matter

BTW You can always tell if youve been exposed to Asbestos because it makes the end of your nose turn blue

I’d be putting the £120 on to his bill. Its his responsibility to prove there is no asbestos.

No John, I think the blue nose is more likely to be down to the radiation that I was subject to rather than the asbestos, funny enough they told us that wouldn’t do us any harm either,
