3M do a very good safety film nick. may be worth giving them a call, but you’ll need to buy a full roll. Could be rather expensive.

Thanks Shane, is it just for flat, or will it be ok on curved glass?

Curved glass too mate. Just use some heat and it will shrink to shape….
Lay the film on the outside of the glass to do the shrinking and help it to get shape, then apply it on the inside

Hi Nick, I’m new to the forum, seems to be very good. I’ve done some rally and race car side glass. You can get the material in different thicknesses, can’t remember what I used but I got the material from a company called Architectural Window Films in Barnet, Hertfordshire, I seem to remember that they were quite helpful at the time. I’ll try and find out what it was and post it next week
Good Luck Steve Morgan -
Hi Steve, I need it to conform to the rear window as well as the sides, if you can find the number that would be very helpful.
Thank you
Nick.

Nick,
I’ve done a bit of searching to get some more info for you. When I did the rally cars for a car manufacturer it was I think the first season of the regs being implimented and there wasn’t much info about. It was only for International events not Nationals. I bought some material from Northgate Solar Controls in Barnet, Hertfordshire. Pretty helpful people try them on 0208 441 4545. I used 2 different films one clear and one silver reflective, I think that apart from the colour they had the same spec. The silver material was RS220XSR. I think you should make sure you get the material that meets todays regs and I think that’ll mean getting in touch with the RAC and or The FIA. I’ve been unable to find any of my notes I think they must have been thrown out, they were quite old.
Hope the above is of help. -
Steve, thanks again for your help, this is for a BTCC car and it does not say what to use, I know it does in the blue book but not BTCC regs.
TOCA seem to be a law to themselves!
Thanks and a happy new year
Nick.

Shane, I have talked to 3M and they do a safety film Scotchshield but they say its no good on curved glass, can you tell me what you used please.
Struggling to find any thing that will go on a curve.

Nick, I’ve just been talking to SSAF window films about the new premises I shall be taking over, and asked them about your query-they do this type of film for curved glass, may be worth giving them a ring, 01493 749174, ask for Steve.

Thanks Lorraine, very helpful 😀 they are sending me a sample to try,
Many Thanks
Nick

Nick it was a few years ago now, but I’ll see what I can find out. I don’t have an account with them anymore, but I have a mate that does, so I’ll ask him to enquire on my behalf.
May be worth talkingh to Lorraines crowd too.

Thanks Shane, I have talked to them very helpful.
Thank you for your time

here is a site that has nice ideas to have a look at on window film design for things like glass etch…
-
That’s a good site Rob, I’ll put that will go in my favorites folder, get some good ideas from them 😀
-
Nick,
I’m sure you can get in touch with TOCA through a website or the RAC. I had to do some Puma door glass and they have a double curve, once I’d got the hang of it I produced an acceptable job, however I did have the luxury of having the glass on the bench – a big advantage! I think it’s all about patience with the heat gun working with the film on the outside to get the it shrunk to the right shape, if it fits nicely on the outside it’ll be OK on the inside. I seem to remember the guy at Northgate Solar actually did window film work himself. Hope you get on OK – keep us posted
Oh and Happy New Year to everyone! -
Hi Steve, have talked to Northgate Solar but they said it would not work on the rear screen, SSAF are sending a sample and it is shrinkable so hopefully I’m sorted now, it only says a protective film must be applied to the glass windows in the regs
Thank you for your help

well got some samples 😀 still no good for what I need 🙁
anyone got any Ideas please?

Nick
Safety / Security films come in various grades / thicknesses. They can be very difficult to shrink / conform on awkward curved glass even for the experienced film applicator.
Give ma a call tomorrow if poss. easier to explain verbally rather than waffling on here.
