  • Applying Frosted Vinyl problem, help needed.

    Here is my problem.

I have a shop front glass window – 3,6m across and I need to install a frosted strip across the bottom about 150mm high by 3600mm across to cover the bottom of the window, it’s a solid strip but with a web address cut out of the middle(1.6m across by 60mm). Sounds easy. I did it, but…..

The problem arose when I realised that the base of the window is not level. It is on a major curve, so that each end of the the strip sits about 2 inches off the bottom whilst the middle is flush, obviously to get my film to sit nicely with no fingers etc it has to be straight as it is. (It was done wet, due to its length).

The customer suggested re-doing it and cutting it 2 inches wider to allow for the sides and then trimming along the curve to the middle on each side, fine if I did it dry, but this will be when it is wet creating major fingers and air pockets, along a base which has `overpaint` and is not entirely level.

I suggested painting the 2 inches on each side to match the base which would put everything level or adding vinyl in the same colour as the base.

Any suggestions? bearing in mind there is lettering cut out in the centre, and the middle will be overlapping the centre by 2 inches and will be wet.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, I don’t want to get it wrong again as this is a very high profile customer.

    Regards

    Jason.

Jason, two methods, how about you make the strip wider than the deepest point, apply it dry from the middle, you should be able to get the vinyl to feed round the curve better if dry as it will stay where it is put, if wet it will want to float back to its original shape.
When the whole strip is applied you could then trim it level at the top.
or the other way, cut the strip to shape first. Again make it over size, and tape it to the window, with the lowest part touching the frame. then using a suitable spacer (piece of wood or plastic) run your scalpel along the bottom of the vinyl so you get the shape of the frame.

Your second idea was perfect. Pure Genius!! I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. Definately More Coffee needed. Thanks.

As for the first idea, very good but it is almost freezing outside and I do not want to attempt any dry app in that kind of length on glass that cold.

Thanks a lot. Much appreciated. Please give yourself a kind pat on the back from me.

    You have saved the day.

    Kind Regards

    Jason. :lol1:
