I cant say i have ever applied a graphic wet using app tape before, but i can only assume that its because you have done so that it has broken down the glue in the tape.

My suggestion would be to dry the tape fully before removal

The problem is not the application tape, the problem is you applied it wet.
you will need to squeegee the water beneath the tape out using firm squeegee motion.
you will need to leave the vinyl in place for long enough to allow the vinyl to adhere.
spraying the tape with water "after" application and squeegeeing sometimes helps break down the tapes adhesion to the letters.
all this is pretty useless if the metal of the bonnet is "cold" because it will take much longer for any sort of adhesion build up. try warming the surface with a heat gun.

if doing it dry, dont heat the panel unless very cold.
once it has been applied and tape removed, then heat the panel to promote adhesion.
