  • Apa printed truck vinyl & matching laminate?

Posted by Lee.Bennett on March 5, 2014 at 9:45 pm

    Hi all,

For the first time in 15 years I have accepted a printed curtain sided box van. The logo I am applying is 1.5 m x 2.5 in one piece. I opted for apa truck vinyl and lam.

Not to concerned about the fitting as we are used to tricky jobs but my real problem occurred today when I laminated the print. The laminate has lots of air trapped & the print looks milky and has lost all it’s colour. Is this normal? I am praying I will go in tomorrow and the air bubbles are gone but I doubt it.

Starting to panic now at around £35 per meter and the job having to leave the body shop tomorrow, I fear I’m screwed.

    Any advice/ reassurance much appreciated.

Hi Lenny truck curtains is my game!!
Apa truck in my opinion is the best media available for this application, yes it is normal for the print to look milky" after lamination but the air bubbles no.
Are you using a heated laminator?

    Hi Andy.

Yes we made the mistake of heated lamination. Luckily the customer told me the vehicle was 28′ when it was actually 20′ so agreed to pay for the prints. The colour improved massively over the weekend and I put the prints in stock for the next vehicle so everything’s fine. I have printed the new logos and cold laminated with no problems. The milky appearance is concerning at first but fades if anyone is reading this after first using the vinyl.

As we have not fitted the logos can I pick your brains a little further Andy?

The logo is a big oval. Will I be better fitting with no backing tape? The vinyl feels quite thick and feels like there will be no stretch without backing? And the way the glue bonds to the curtain leads me to believe there will not be a lot of grab when first applied. Am I correct?

Thanks in advance for any advice given.

    Cheers Lee.

Hi Lee always use a low tack mask/app tape for application, once applied you will be surprised how well apa truck vinyl grabs to the curtain.
