Is there any advantages over foamex, is this less prone to expansion / contraction and stable / rigid with temperature to the UK weather conditions aspect ?

Would this be better (than foamex) for straight to wall mount than foamex and is it available thick enough to be panatrim enclosed or would just using foamex be more cost effective?

There are other folk on here better to answer that question but I will give you what I have learnt.

Foamboard – Cheap, but expands like mad and looks very unprofessional on large area, especially if in a dark colour (absorbs more heat,expands more). I remember doing a swing sign in 19mm Foamboard (only800mmx 600mm) and the customer phoned to say it was curved! by the time I got round to see it, it was flat again.

In my last job we used foamboard for all signs (‘cos people don’t like to pay that extra for Dibond/Rynoboard etc) and we got away with it.

The aluminium covered boards (mentioned above) do not distort/expand like foamboard, are thinner, a bit more difficult to cut, but give a much more professional look to a sign. Being thin they are easier to mould round a curved facsia or wall/fence as well.

Acryllic is another subrtrate used a lot in panatrim frame situations, but it is heavier more brittle and usually with nice sharp edges to cut your hands(unless you sand them of course),and it is expensive.

if it is dibond.. then its aluminium faced front & rear like dave says.
its excellent to work with and does not distort like foamex, but does cost a fair bit more.

I think the product you are referring to may be Foamalux Xtra.

This is a 10mm thick PVC board, with white faces and an 8mm thick black core:-

Cheers Phill, sounds very much like it, the stuff I was looking at was only around 5-7mm thick but I suppose it could vary, is it any good?

Cheers Rob, I’ll try and move off the foam board and convince (as your other recent answer on the recording studio sign) customers to pay a little extra for a better end result.

As an add to this thread if foamex and all it copies are fitted correctly It will not repeat will not warp and distort. If you use the correct screws and collars and slot (elongate) the holes in the foamex it allows the board to expand and contract. the collars stop the screw getting a solid grip on the board. Its hard to describe without pics and if I can find the tech sheet I will scan and post it. I have been fixing foamex panels like this for years and never had a bother.
