I would never take a credit card payment from someone that I was suspicious about as they are so easily stopped.

I’d have asked for a bank transfer – write back and tell him that you will be pleased to fill his order but unfortunately you are experiencing problems with your credit card payment system and are unsure how long this will take to be rectified – in order to proceed can a bank transfer please be arranged.

Out of interest I would also check out the card, the address associated with it etc

It’s a huge scam, I’ve read about it on two other USA sign forums I frequent.
First they email, then they call using a relay system for the deaf.
Any credit card numbers they give you will come back as being bad.
Do not fall for this scheme.

One of my clients had a similar email, he did as you’ve done and got the card details, then rang the bank and they confirmed it was a stolen card.

I just googled this shipping information that a William Johnson sent me from Canby, Oregon. He wanted me to ship 150 trophies to Africa. I came across this site, so I am assuming that we, indeed are being (or trying to be) scammed. I knew this was a scam. He wanted me to send these trophies through the shipping company: FEDERF CARGO AND TRADING COMPANY
and the person to contact is: MR GANIYU IBRAHIM

Did he contact you with the telephone via http://www.isp-reply.com as well? That is a company who translates for people like the deaf, but I am assuming he is not.

The company I work for has saved all the emails he has sent us too.

Yes, we just got an e-mail to print 70,000 brochures to ship to Africa. Same guy, same information. I know of two other print shops that have received this e-mail. They call first using the deaf relay system (because it is not traceable) to get your e-mail address. It is indeed a scam. Spread the word.

I thought my contact with gentleman was very strange… so I hesitated to go any farther. The next day I get a phone call for someone using the deaf relay system. It was "Reverend John" wanting to know if I contacted the shipping company.

I thought all of this was very strange, so did a google search for the Federf Cargo company and found this thread. After reading this information, I don’t think I want to proceed with the job. Even if it is legit.

Anyway… I wanted to thank the other sign shop owners from the UK for posting this information…. it has been helpful.

Now that I found the site… I will be stopping by from time to time to see what is going on with UK signs!!

I can’t believe, with all the adverse publicity, all the government warnings and all the internet info about scams, that people still get caught with these scams. The Nigerian scam especially.

If you break down the actual content of the Nigerian and similar scams, what they are asking is, in its most basic form, dishonest.

Anyone who is attracted to earning money from a dishonest transaction really deserves to be ripped off.

Makes my blood boil with these peeps on the telly complaining they’ve lost their life savings because they have been conned. But end of the day, they were prepared to rip off whoever to make easy money, so I can’t see the problem.

This Reverend scam is different though.

I had a client that imports and exports African giftware, and he was contacted by the same bloke. Being in the export business, he thought nothing of the request, but he has a policy of checking a credit card before he proceeds with an order.

He got a valid mastercard number, but rang his bank to get the number and card validated, and was told it had been reported stolen.

Its always worth doing the checks and balances when dealing with an unknown in another land.

Be cautious is a good thing.

as they are 60+ years old, they were very shocked,

even more shocked when they got a update your BT broardband now or we`ll turn you off email a few days later.

they talked for over 2hrs to someone on the phone, they let them take over their pc, they said they were looking for a virus, they were not of course they were looking for bank details etc… they nearly got scammed into giving their bank account etc, also they were told they had a huge amount of viruses and it`ll cost $400 to cure it.

Denise, they probably do have a huge amount of viruses on their computer now. If they let someone access it remotely then they probably have all sorts of undesirable stuff on it. If they know someone they can trust it might be worth getting it checked out to ensure they don’t keep passing on personal details.

I have watched when we had a problem with signlab, had the chap over in HQ took over our computer to look at all the settings etc. Imagine what someone can do, all they have to do is upload another program and it can be sitting in the background waiting etc. Scary.
