Anybody ever done really small letters before?
Posted by Warren Beard on 11 March 2008 at 11:46Hi All
I need to find out if some small text is cuttable by laser using 5mm acrylic.
The stroke width of the letters are 3mm, the overall height of the letters are 18mm cap height (14mm lower case)
I have spoken to one supplier and they said their laser is too strong and cannot do the small cut outs inside the letters.
Anybody ever done really small letters before?
cheers

I’m still cutting them by hand on my old Meddings Scroll saw (although we always called them jigsaws)..getting harder on the eyes as the years pass though!

that must be some skill if you can hand cut 5mm thick acrylic letters that are only 3mm think 😮
How do you do inside the letters?

we have done lots of keyrings on our rotary cnc… that measurements sound normal…
Recently a colleague in another business just ordered a laser, the samples he had showed laser-ed letters in most substrates and the smallest was 2mm high text, i could hardly read it. lol
I am not sure hes got his machine yet. I pass this thread on to him

Warren the heat generated by the laser to cut through 5mm perspex will distort and buckle 3mm width letters. I don’t think its possible.

Hi Peter
That’s what the one supplier told me, does anybody know if it is possible to get acrylic cut at this width otherwise what material can be cut at this width?
cheers

Warren not to sure, I used to run a 100 watt laser and we were often asked to cut small lettering but had to turn it away. Don’t think there is an answer.

Good idea Lynn, thanks
Thanks Peter, it does not have to be acrylic but it does have to be that size and preferable between 3 and 5mm in depth.
Thanks guys, and gals
