  • Any suggestions on how to control static/dust problems?

Posted by Lorraine Clinch on 20 December 2005 at 16:10

……..apart from getting the hoover out regularly, I mean! :lol1:

I have real problems with this, and as the business is growing, and I get more over-run with stock, it is getting worse.

I have carpet down which I think is a major contributor, but it would be a major job to remove it and lay a hard floor.

What do you all do? As my shop is a mere 11 feet x 15 feet, I haven’t a seperate room which I could use as a dust-free zone for applying, which would be ideal. 😥

I really need to re-fit it, but I am worried it will fall down, due to lack of TLC over the years!

We have the same problem when removing protective film. This builds up a static charge which attracts the dust particles. Our unit is partially carpeted which is part of the problem. Alison and I are seriously contemplating coming in one day between Christmas and new year to strip out all of the carpeting (it’ll take all day considering how much stuff we’ll have to move about).

Sorry I can’t suggest any solutions – just agree with you about the problem 😕

I stand on static mats. Static is made worse when you shuffle your feet etc, so I have found static mats around my work bench are an improvement

    hi lorraine 😀

why dont you replace your carpet area with linoleum…..rob gave me this tip a while ago, when i bought my printer….the linseed oil in it stops static full-stop 😀 i cut away half of my carpet in the workshop to replace it with lino…it really works 😀

Lynn I think Peter should sweep it once a day for you, then shuffle ( as Shane has hinted ) out into the yard where you can discharge him.

Sometimes I feel as if I’ve hit the nail on the head.

    Hi Shane,
I have noticed with my Roland that printing night time is better and less dust. as well with the dust I always mop before I do anything. I just make sure its a clean area. Plus I have every machine in a separate room that helps 2 if yo have a big area to work. 🙂

i agree with nik here. use linoleum flooring. even if lifting the carpet is a big hassle. you could just lay the lino ontop?
we too have the linoleum in our print room. its great… of course we sweep it regular but give it a good wipe with a damp cloth/mop once a day and your sorted.

I don’t understand Lynn – why should having big breasts cause a problem with static 😕

    clothing is a contributor too…
our large banner rolls come in with static cling wrapped around them, we place on the JV3 and roll away, however I have to hold the JV3 metal area to stop me getting an electric shock.. also carpet and I want to pull it out.

However the company have made their JV3 room out of scrap foamex, it works a treat. Hybrid said it was ‘the’ cleanest JV3 in the country as no dust in the air so cannot get under the heads!

I have never thought of Peter as electrifying Russ :lol1: although lynn would likely disagree 😉

Phill, I had to check lynns comment 3 times before I worked out the…er… typo…… 😕

Thanks Nancy. I have been working late tonight and it seems that there is way less dust on the prints.

Being a typical aussie male tho, mop & floor are not two words that are common in my vocabulary in the same sentence at the same time.

In fact, sweep & floor & empty & bins are not often heard in the same sentence either. 😳 (that is what kids are for aren’t they?)

I don’t have carpets here either but the dust is a nightmare. Between the static from computers which attract dust and the plastic and vinyls!!!! I get shocks all the time. When I weed my hair stands on end!!!!!

must stop wearing cheap nylon undies I think! 😉 😀 Rubber from now on 😮 😮 😮

We use an anti-static spray from Cox Plastics

It does work – spray it onto a cloth or feather duster & it actually removes the charge on the substrate allowing the dust to fall off the sheet rather than just moving it around.

cleaning the sheet before you remove the protective film & around your work bench is usually enough 😀

    Hmmmm!
You get a shock when you remove the protective film?
    Can’t be that protective then

a humidifier should help to control the static build-up that increases in the cold weather…too dry without one.
It works here for me, and I have carpet too + 2 cats and a long haired dog….. 🙁 so I have some major dust and hair flying around

we have a whole house humidifier attached to the furnace, but a small one placed in your work area should help.
The extra moisture in the air will help a lot
and it will help with heating costs…moist air holds heat longer than dry air

You’re right Carrie – offers like that are few and far between! 😉

    Cool!

I’m away from my computer for a couple of days, and find I have loads of replies.
    Thanks everyone!

I like the sound of the anti-static mats Shane, just need to know where I can get them from here….!

I have taken the momentous decision of moving premises! (Not only cos of the dust!)

A shop has become vacant a bit further up the street, just where it is busy (I get missed where I am). It isn’t very much larger, but differently shaped, and I need to improve the business image, and take it forward. It also means I can have lino on the floor!!!!

    Yay, no more dust!

(Mind you, the rent is 3 times what I pay now.)

Prices will have to go up…..

congratulations on your move lorraine. Wish I was closer I’d offer to help you move.

I’m sure you’ll look back in a few months and wonder how you survived at the old place….

Static control mats are usually available from any company that services cleaning companies. Someone specialising in industrial cleaning supplys would be your best bet.

Thanks Shane, I’ll look into suppliers.

Geoff doesn’t know yet that I have decided to go for it, 😕 he hasn’t even seen the shop! Ah well, he’ll come round. I really need somewhere with a fitting bay for vehicles, but there is nowhere like that around here-not that I could afford anyway. I’ll just have to carry on with fitting vehicles outside.

    Roll on summer! 😀 😀

I use to work in the electronics industry years ago and we worked on static mats.
You could also get mats for benches etc.
These were all linked with a strap and grounded to earth to discarge.

RS components & Farnell components would be worth a look to get an idea what is available.

    Tim.
