Any plotted vinyl pricing tips?
Posted by David Hammond on 28 June 2016 at 14:36Whilst we use software to produce our print prices, what it doesn’t do well is price up CAD vinyl, although sometimes we just price it as print & laminated job and use cut vinyl, but it can be very hit and miss. Same when we come to doing vans we just ‘guess’ a price. Although we’re having a push on the signage side of things so trying to get things in order.
I’ve had a read through previous posts on here, as I thought I’d seen ball park figures for cut vinyl, such as small/medium/large text, as obviously some are easier to weed than others.
Thinking of just charging £x per meter of cut vinyl, weeded and taped, depending on the complexity of the cutting, but not sure what X should be.
We use Metamark 7 Series vinyl, so not your cheap rubbish either, but well priced for the quality of the product.
I’m interested in your thoughts, or am I over thinking things again?? :lol1:

vinyl + app tape = £ +25%

cutting / weeding time = minutes (x hourly rate)its hard cos you could have a complex 300 x 300 small text lots of weeding or some simple shapes etc, i try to use time a lot, same with my embroidery machine, time rather than stitch count, set my hourly rate for the embroidery machine, i do that with cutter.

I have seen this app, it might help in pricing vehicle wraps.
I have not used it myself but I am tempted -
Metamark series 7 isnt that expensive that I would be worried about losing the odd meter, especially as you have factored in so many other costs that make up your total job.The real profit is in the application as far as I understand things. If, for example, the job is worth £150 finished then an extra £3-£10 in vinyl cost isnt going to push you into the red. And if you are out £20-£30 on that size van you will know for next time.
I think that you may be relying too much on software to do , what is in my opinion, your job.
Sometimes the brain is mightier than the software programme. 🙂

The software’s crap at pricing vinyl jobs. Print job’s it’s fairly good at (with a little persuasion at times)
As you say van’s are ok as were typically talking £150+ for a van, and the majority of the job is labour, so there’s plenty to cover ourselves with.
We get asked for supply only vinyl, or the occasional small cut vinyl sign, and its these that can be problematic.
Always struggle when I know what we’re paying per M of vinyl, trying to mark it up, feel’s really cheeky sometimes.

If they want supply only van graphics then they are price shoppers IMO so you will struggle against the "value offer" type sign people.
I would have a "value" range and service for price shoppers, one that doesn’t tie up your time otherwise your computer will have a fit and tell you you are losing thousands a week etc. -

Just having a read of some older threads……
I started my business with small supply only vinyl work, you NEED minimum 4/5x media cost including app tape. However this multiple will vary as the base cost of your media rises. Supply only work is a totally different business in many ways to how I think you currently work.
You cant earn if you dont have really efficient production methods, if the job is only £10 the most you can possibly earn is £10 trouble is you can lose £20 making it (all your costs included) -

i charged £25 per 610 linear meter weeded & taped, if it was say a load of 150mm WWW addresses then i added a surcharge as required to cover my costs. Some will say its too dear & some won’t but it goes back to knowing what you need to earn & some jobs need to to earn a high profit because they are taking you away from jobs that you could be doing earning an equivalent profitKev

This particular job was a good customer, and was plotting 250x ‘ACADEMY’ in black vinyl, for them to install on a fleet of vehicles. They were probably only 25mm tall. IIRC we charged £35 plm, using 1220. Probably used about 1.5m.

David, all you have to do is work out your material cost + labour minus it from the invoiced total & see how close you are to what your business needs to earn per hour. As you said they are good customers so you can afford to be under every now and then all about swings & roundabouts

I charge per hour or part of for fitting jobs 1,2or 3 fitter
i charge the customer £30 per meter cut weeded and lowtacked ready to fit sometimes a little more if its fiddly. Its abit swings and roundabouts but its very quick and simple and i seem to earn a living from it.

Well that makes me look like "Low Ball Lola" at 3/4 x lol (some I get a bit more). However in my defense I do have to compete with the Chinese and I do send out around a 1000 running meters a week. I suppose it what works for you.
