if so what will you use to bond it to the mdf?
Better solution would be to seal and paint the mdf and apply vinyl direct

Customer just wanted a quick sign. It is to be stuck to the MDF. The back and edges will be primed and glossed painted so it can go out side.

Hi Lee,

Foamboard according to my book of marvels 1.021% per 10’C rise or fall.

MDF assuming standard “exterior grade” 0.203% per 10’C rise or fall.

In English – Foambord stretches & Shrinks 5 times more than MDF so 1000mm sign would grow by 10.2mm if manufactured at 10’C on a 20’C day.

hope that helps i have been using it to make boxes for signs since i started 6 years ago and its always worked out ok for me.

Clear as mud!!………….. in English,I understand what you mean. I did phone up Cox’s who said that if it was stuck, one good hot summers day and the pressure from the foamboard, would just make it pop from the backing board. My customer is going to screw it to the back board.

Hi Lee,
That’s about the size of it one hot summers day and it becomes an “ex-sign” specially if made at this time of the year!

Incidentally, if its a straight sided sign we use some rather smart u-channel that gives 25mm deep coverage (50mm in total over the two sides), but is low profile so it only comes 10mm off of what ever you attach it to.

We allow 35mm for signs of 2000wx1000h always worked for us!

Hi Lee,

Also with foam board make sure you drill bigger holes so it allows for expansion around the screws. It will warp outside and make the sign go all wavey.

Personally recommend for another £50.00-ish (at cost) he could have reynobond which will last for a lot longer and make his sign look much more professional.

Hi Stephen

All we can do is advise. He’s been told about the problems of sticking. Told him to use a bigger screw hole than screw size. Told him about the advantages of dibond/reyobond but at the end of it, he pay’s his money and takes his choice.

He’s happy with what we have done for him.
