  • Aluminium Sign Tray-tips for making the corners

Following the advice from previous posts, we decided to make a sign tray this afternoon, out of 3mm Alu-Panel. Dan gets a bit worried when I bring out the power tools, but I think we’ve done a good job for a first time go at it. Its going to look much better than what we have up at present, more professional.
I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on the best way to do the corners so we know for the future. We are happy with the way they look, but it took a bit of faffing to get them to look neat. After routing out the section were it bends, we used a chisel to tap away the excess squares in the corners, which removed the aluminium easily but maybe this wasn’t the best tool to use?
any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

    Kate

I’m doing the same today, four 10′ by 5′.
Ears still ringing from the router. :lol1:
Quite concerned with the starting, but after a conversation yesterday with Richard of this board for a few pointers, and a bit of patience all going okay at present.

And thanks to Richard for your advice :thumbup2:

Ther are several ways to make your corners, I find cutting like this makes a nice neat finish, but takes a little longer

thanks peter, will try that next one we do. its worth spending a lttle longer on it and getting it right, because they really look good when they are done.
Dave- know what you mean about the ears ringing, my arms are quivering as well! we were a bit hesistant at first as didnt want to ruin the expensive board but found once we got on with it it was fine and we are very happy with the result. Ours was a bit smaller than yours and only had the one to do, so best of luck iwth the rest of yours!

After routing it, what is the best way to fold them? Edge of the table?

    Soory Marek,
meant to answer , but got waylaid.

I clamp a timber baton to hold the dibond down, over hanging the table edge. Then using 2 pieces of timber fixed together in a “T” shape and the top of the “T” has a routed grove. use this to bend the dibond.

The length of the top of the “T” can be about 2′ long, and just move it along the dibond bending the angle in about 3 stages. Hope this makes sense, if not I will take a pic to show you.

Perfect sense Peter. I figured you would do it in a way similar to this. Thanks for answering. 😀
I think I am going to cut some Dibond today and play around with it.
