Air Brush effect on vinyl to enhance my sign work.
Posted by Jeff_Brown on 28 March 2011 at 18:02Hi guys, Need to get more work… I can’t afford a print cut system, so I need to add a little more to the final pieces…
I am hoping this may attract a little more work.
It adds around 1/2 hour to the whole job, but I think it is worth it, plus I can go a whole lot cheaper than print and cut shops.
Any input?

Well if that only adds 1/2 hour then I’m well impressed. Looks great.

Apart from your 3!!! LOL
Anyway – it looks fine. Adding a little more to it? What – airbrushing, hand painting?
If you think it will make you money then go for it.

Well, the fade is airbrushed.. It is a red candy over a yellow sparklescent.

that’s probably the way for you to go Jeff,
if it’s cheap for you to do (time and cost) and gives the sign a worthwhile additional profit, then it can only be a good thing. I dunno what the market is like out there but try not to go too much cheaper than the print cut boys, even if you can it’ll just get you over-run and trying to keep up! better to be busy by reputation and, knowing what you can do with an airbrush, i don’t think it would be too hard to build one fairly quickly for you. I guess as always, it’s a case of finding your niche and exploiting it.

When I first read this thread I hadn’t realised the fade effect was achieved by airbrushing vinyl. Perhaps others hadn’t understood either which may explain the lack of comments?
A few pictures demonstrating the steps involved would be of interest to many I think.

I agree with you Phill, a good descriptive topic title is Important in order to get clicks & responses. As well as the message main body of course. 😀

Brilliant effect Jeff, would love to see a step by step!
p.s. I agree with Phil and Rob about titles…I thought ‘A little bit extra’ was about male jelly babies. 😮 😀

Does anyone remember Butch Anton coming to Sign UK and demonstrating spray paint effects? – this was many, many moons back.
I originally saw him at an ISA show and bought a Video of the fade technique and also where he crumpled vinyl up, sprayed from one side, turned the vinyl around and sprayed a highlight colour from the other side. Brilliantly simple but stunning…now where did I ever put those videos?
some of his stuff is shown here http://www.superfrog.com

Yes, I remember that, had a chat with him too.
And, if I’m not mistaken Art Schilling was there, also had a chat with him. I remember him saying he saw my van in the parking lot and like the airbrushed lettering on it.
That was when nearly every stand concentrated on vinyl cutters and hardly any digital stuff 😀

You’ve got a good memory…I also saw Art at the ISA show, showing special effects on the Gerber Edge which he set up a specialist website for.
both great guys and very approachable.

I’ve met Butch on a few occasions, also his brother.
I believe he called his effects with spray cans "The Norwegian Airbrush".
He writes a monthy article in a free trade mag, Sign Builders.
He detailed his battle with cancer the past few years and seems to be doing well.
I’ve had lunch with East Coast Artie, who also drove out to my place to assist me personally with SignGold on a fire truck when he was their rep.
He used to live in PA.
Both are nice fellows.
I think any time we can add that extra" little something" it’s a win/win for both us and our client.
We give them something special, and they can see we take pride in our craftsmanship.

quote Harry Cleary:any links to the vids?
this was well before Youtube…think they may even have been Betamax videos
Having a clear out of stock room next week so may unearth them then

Were they to do with ‘Sticky Fingers’ co. I remember them being at sign UK demonstrating all paint effects a real joy to watch and such a shame no one like that attends the show anymore.
btw, Im sure it was called Sticky Fingers…could be wrong 😕
