  • Agfa Anapurna XL, advice needed please?

    Hi Guys,

I’ve just acquired an Agfa Anapurna XL and know very little about it!

I’m wondering if there are any experiences users out there who may be able to help us in the future with some of their hard earned knowledge.

We are not new to digital print with 3 Roland machines, 760mm, 1370mm & 1880mm already in our print room.

    Any volunteers?

A good tip is dont empty the wast tank wile you have air pressure it will put solvent in places you dont want it and can lead to major problems.

We have found Lyson 7300 is magenta week less then 100% when profiling. We changed to triangle but Triangles support is non existent so looking to change to inkmill.

Our machine likes to print good when it is very hot head base temp 43-45 ink temp 40-44 but a good idea is to print with the front and rear doors open, I keep the side door open a little at home side to let the hot air out and have started to not run the extractors they dont do much when it is closed and when open it is cooler any way. I print corflute at 3mm head hight it prints sharp when hot, the hight might be different on yours because I changed the ball screw after delivery and levelled the head to the bed my self after agfa tech came and couldnt do any thing to fix it. I also got the books for the printer I was told the techs are only ment to have that shows you how to pull it down and where all wires and fuses go and loads of stuff.

How is it going so far any problems? Since we got this with wasatch we upgraded wasatch to full version and run 4 printers through the one rip.

Interested to know ink you are using.

    Hi Luke,

    thanks for your reply!

The machine is currently filled with Lyson/nazdar 7300 inks, which ive been told are an old and superseded ink set. I have been warned that colour is a bit strange on these because they were designed to match another ink set??

Ive been recommended to go with Nazdar 7470 inks, however i didnt want to fully change the inks until i knew the machine was working properly. This ink only comes in 5l containers, so its a pretty big investment if the machine is not worth keeping.

I use nazdar 1302 inks in all my rolands and find them very good inks. Im going to stick with them for the moment, as my experience has been good and i have too many variables at the moment!

The rip version is 6.1 and i use wasatch on our other machines. I currently dont have the 6.1 disk to install the rip software, so i only have one file to print that was left by the previous owners. Once i can get hold of 6.1 i can start to test the machine a bit more.

I have been told about the 6.9 upgrade and the multi printer version which sounds great, as it will run the other three rolands too. Once im up and running, im going to do this. However, wasatch were not too helpful when i contacted them about obtaining a compy of the 6.1 version media. They stated that it was an old version that they dont keep a copy of. I may be a touch cynical, but this sounds a little odd!

Workwise, im looking to print predominantly ACM and other similar boards.

We’ve had a few teething problems due to the length of time that this machine had been sat around before we bought it, but nothing major so far!

We haven’t printed any jobs yet, so im sure there will be teething problems. THe only one weve not managed to sort out is: When printing, the print jumps to the right in 50mm steps, which looks to me like a linear encoder type problem.

    Thanks for your reply 🙂

    Hello

The Lyson 7470 is for the Anapurna M the guy I bought my machine from told me dont use it, he tried and it did not work the heads are very different. Every one will tell you there ink works but when it dose not work its your problem.

You should be able to upgrade your wasatch to 6.9 I dont think it costs too much digi print supplies are all ways doing specials. I think there is a new update coming also. You normally have to pay extra for a disk then down load but you should keep your system backed up, I have loaded all programs back into computer so many times it takes for ever, you can get a dock that you put your hard drive in and it will copy it to another hard drive.

The 50mm jump sounds strange I would clean the encoder reader try blow it out with air line and clean the encoder strip. The encoder reader is at the back of the head unit.

With ACM I would look at using the board made for printing I have trouble getting ink to stick to the board we use Im sure it has a clear coating.

The print heads can be pulled apart cleaned and should be like new.

Thats interesting about the ink. I wonder what the difference is between the M and the XL, apart from physical size.

Just looking on the Nazdar website, their spec states:

NAZDAR Lyson 7470 Series UV Piezo Pop Inkjet Ink

Lyson 7470 inks are for use in Inca Eagle, Columbia and Spyder models, Agfa/Gandi 1224 & 3150, Annapurna M & XL, Chromaprint 22UV, L&P Virtu 36, Leggett & Platt UV Flatbed printers. Lyson 7470 Series Digital Imaging Inks are designed for superior performance on standard POP materials. Primary uses of this product are for POP displays, durable graphics and billboard banners where flexibility and adhesion is of primary importance. Typical substrates are polypropylene, styrene, Sintra, Dibond and foamboard.

The primary features of these inks are as follows:
Superior adhesion performance on a variety of polypropylene substrate materials.
Formulated for use in flexible applications
Excellent resistance to edge chipping on styrene, foamboard and fluted polypropylene materials when used with a knife or router cutter.
Long term exterior performance with proven resistance to the effects of UV degradation and color fade.
High impact, high intensity colors with extended color gamut
    Consistent color density values
Adhesion on a variety of flexible and rigid substrates
    SUBSTRATES:
    polypropylene
    styrene
    Sintra
    Dibond
    foamboard

Adhesion should always be tested as adhesion does depend upon curing conditions, age and manufacturer of substrate. Adhesion may be improved when the substrate is cleaned with a suitable solvent such as isopropanol.

An equipment conversion to a Nazdar Lyson ink must be carried out by a qualified Nazdar SourceOne Digital Service Technician. Hi I am an AGFA Anapurna M2050, there is a few others here who have the M2 model as well.

We are on the G2 inks, I have admit they are okay, they are not perfect as black is a little weak, but if you up your passes and slow it down u seem to cure better.

The 50mm just sounds like encoder, quite a large jump tbh. I had issues like that before and it is possble that the materials still have static-charge in them and it travels into the machine, so grounding and static-bars needed.

AGFA advise to me on cleaning that encoder strip was VDU wipes, however other engineers for other printers will say different things like water.

The machine was quite dusty, so i wouldnt be surprised if the jumping issue is encoder related. The manual suggests cleaning with Isopropanol so i’ll try it.

Im not aware of the G2 inks, but will report back on the Nazdar ones once ive got them in.

:police: Please take a moment to look over our Board Rules.

What do you guys generally pay per litre for inks?

Im going to be ordering inkmill uv ink made for this printer this week. Im getting it through adam holdom igsuk. £65litre. With these inks you are suppose to be able to use the original profiles, Im hoping this will be the case if so I wont need to re-profile just revert back to the original agfa profiles and it should print as the official agfa ink did.

I think I have a lot to learn about this machine!

you mentioned before about cleaning print heads. What is the best way of recovering blocked heads?

Is the white worth bothering with? Mine is blocked solid.
