  • advice with Van Lettering vinyl & software?

Posted by Lewis Battersby on 2 July 2014 at 13:14

I am going to be sign lettering my first van next week a Vivaro Van. It is just having some simple text with a one colour logo on the sides and back and front.

I was wondering what is the best vinyl to use for the job as I want to make sure it goes on right. Any suggestions please?

I have also heard about software this can provide you with the exact template of the vehicles and its sizes. Can anyone help me with what this is called?

Thank you for taking the time to read this and any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I would use a minimum of polymeric vinyl for vehicles.

The vehicle outline disc is available from https://impactgs.co.uk/

    Cheers

Have you decided what brand of vinyl you would like to use for day to day jobs? Most people find they favour one particular brand because it seems to weed better for them or they find it easier to apply.
Get samples & try different brands to decide for yourself.
Be careful with vehicle outline disks, the templates are a guide only & not always 100% accurate size wise. Good for showing customers artwork but I always measure any type of van I haven’t lettered before.

Just make sure you don’t make your text to big, text that completely fills the panels looks really bad, most designs need some breathing room (negative space).

    Thank you martin!

For are day to day vinyl I have been using Ritrama O Range Polymeric Gloss Vinyl which I have found to be easy to apply how ever on layering up for instance red base with white overlay it does soon to not be 100% opaque which is annoying. Can I ask what vinyl you like to use for your van signage so I can order a sample and give is a go. 🙂

Great advice on the oversizes text. I am sure that I would have fallen into that one. I will post up a mock-up of the design to get your advice 🙂

    Cheers

Lewis I started off using O range but have been advised about shrinkage so I’m trying a couple of different options, Avery 700 series was recommend on here as well as Oracle.

    Hi,

We’ve been using Metamarks’ M7 Range or Spandex IP5700 now for the last 2 years and very happy with it…

If I’ve needed a more compliant vinyl for panel curves etc I have used Avery 900 as well..

Sorry Lewis, didn’t see this earlier. I use oracal 551 as a day to day vinyl, does most things, probably get away with 651 for a lot of the stuff I do but I don’t want to have to stock 2 different grades when the difference in price isn’t huge.
What you use is really personal choice, basically what you feel most comfortable working with. Get samples from as many suppliers as possible so you can compare different brands yourself
