    Evening folks 😀

    Right here’s the deal …

Been doing decals now for 6 months+ just motorbike sponsor decals really and names for motorbike screens, nothing big.

However I really follow the MotoGP and I would like to turn my Suzuki GSX-R 400RR SP2 into a Sete Gibernau race rep.

Here are some pics of where I am, what I am after and my photo shopped image so far :

Sete Gibernau – 2009 Ducati GP9 (the style I want to copy from)

    Mine as it is now

My question is, I don’t really know where to start and what methods I need to be using to pull this off.

The vinyl I use is Oracal 751C, take the last image, where its white at the bottom, I will be wanting to cover the bottom of the fairing in white vinyl, would you apply this with a hinge method starting at the center ? also how big a piece of vinyl would I need ? would I do a wet installation or dry, and should I be using heat (in my case a hair dryer).

Sooo many questions, so little experiance lol.

I hope someone can give me some starting pointers.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Matt 🙂

    edit,
Apologies Diablo. my comments sounded a bit Ott when I read them this morning. they were meant more as a friendly jibe, the written word and and Sella can come out distorted…..

I’ve vinyled a few bikes in the past.
Your probably best off getting the base colours sprayed as it can be a real pain to get the vinyl right. Then all you have to do is vinyl the text and gold bits making the whole job easier.
See DRS trackbike thread in the portfolio.

You need to design using a vector drawing package such as corel otherwise you cannot cut the lettering. Photoshop is not a sutable design package for this.

As for covering sections using coloured vinyl you are best to do this dry. A hair drier will help – but a hot air gun would be better to allow the vinyl to stretch. Your biggest problem will be avoiding bubbles – this take practice to get right. There are some vinyls called "easy apply" that are designed to make the application process easier. These have channels embossed into the glue side to allow air to escape when the vinyl is being applied.

easy that one mate, we do about 3 bikes a month, simple that design, why dont you put the stripes on??

Some shapes distort with the bikes shape & you may end up cutting to shape on the bike, make templates in paper then reproduce in vinyl, takes a bit of time, not worth the money but if your into bikes, your into bikes..not sure how to add an image or i would..[/img]

Cheers for the positive inputs guys 🙂

The software I use is Signblazer Elements and Coral X3 to cut and produce my artwork, I can cut letters clearly down to as low as 3mm square 😀

I like the idea of a paper template Phil Veitch I’ll be sure to give that a go, I can get the measurements and reproduce this in cad to a T and scale in Elements and cut.

I think the hardest part is going to be the bottom white bit, but as you say practice makes perfect, when I decide to give this a go soon I’ll update with what a mess I make :lol1:

    Cheers.
