  • advice please, illuminated multi side facia.

    Hey Guys n Girls,

I’m looking for some advice here please. I have an old georgian bay window style facia to do in the next few weeks, they want chrome or brushed built letters with led backlit (halo) on the main front part of the facia, on either side of the main they want illuminated signs.

My thoughts are to go with a tray on each of the three sides but, i’m not sure how the gaps will look. making it in one piece is not possible. the electrics / transformer are all tucked inside too. my main quandry is how to fix the sign at the top, bearing in mind that it’s going up under the canopy, and at the bottom … longer bottom return to go under the facia or, equal returns and fit flush to the edge f the facia? I think the latter… less to get mis-aligned!

it’s been suggested that I could use ali sign trim with composite panels which slide in but again, it’ll look a little disjointed. I also thing that even if i fit it on top of the current architrave, the resulting 25-20mm gap begind the panel will not be enough for illumination… or could that use diffused led’s too?

another consideration with this job is the fact that it’s only 50yrds from the sea so must be easily cleaned – they clean the sign weekly, I think a tray would be best as the water runs off, not into the trim.

finally, the halo on the main letters is borderline but, being in a ‘conservation area’ they can’t have light boxes, thus the Bistro sides need to be subtlly done, led’s there too?

I’m open to all advice on this one as the built ups are new to me, done plenty of flat cut and moulded but not illuminated etc.

have attached a quick sketch of the job from one perspective.

    thanks,
    Hugh

jeez, 3am – no wonder my eyes hurt – 6hrs straight of artwork!

    Hi Hugh

Think you are right for a tray

When we’ve done them around bay windows we always put the join off the corners as shown. Much more forgiving if the panels dont butt up exactly. Also we often put a small upward lip on the top edge of the tray to allow fixing from the front – its a ‘shadow gap’ so you dont even notice it.

    Cheers
    Macky

Thanks David, hadn’t thought of doing it like that, makes perfect sense now! Re the top, there’s just no way to get at it with a 150mm drop on the canopy thing, I think it’ll have to be supported on bottom rail and just have to have stop up in the top to prevent it tilting forward, should work!

Hugh, before you go spending loads of time on this might be worth checking that the customer is allowed to do what they want, spent time on a similar job few years ago only to find the customer hadn’t asked about planning permission and it was a listed building :lol1:

I have pointed that out Martin, they don’t care and will run the risk, the Halo shouldn’t be a problem as it’s a back light, it’s the side Bistro’ bits I need to work out better. I have an idea for them!

    thanks for mentioning it.

    Hi Guys,

have finished the artwork on this but need a bit of advice.

the main letters will be internally lit -led’s facing facia for halo effect. easy.

the Bistro also need to be lit but due to being much thinner letters i’m trying to work out the best way to do this.

thinking back to Andy Gormans perspex halo effect I was wondering if something similar could be done, ie, stand the letters off slightly, white or chrome macking to reflect the light which would come via led’s and through thin letter shape slits cut into the panel, the light coming through would hit the chrome, bounce back onto the facia and halo.

of am i making it difficult? I did consider neon but I really don’t think that A, it’s suitable or B, allowed!

    any help much appreciated,

    thanks,
    Hugh

Fret cut and backlit with acrylic and LED’s , ( 10mm push through acrylic or just back up the tray) and illuminated with LED lightsheet if you want to keep profile narrow or LEDS at a tight spacing to prevent hotspotting.
