  • advice please applying vinyl to a painted surface

    Hi All

I have a shop sign to do and is silver vinyl 751C on to an already painted surface (a few months old)

What should I be aware of, if anything…… besides the clean well preparation.

Would a felt squeegee be the better option as paint is not always perfectly smooth?

    Thanks

    Warren

Couple of things spring to mind:

Get rid of the oily grime with meths, ALWAYS apply dry – no worries about what kind of squeegee (felt is good once the tape is off). Don’t worry about a few lumps & bumps – you can always fix it when the tape is peeled. And if it’s not a hot day – heat bond the vinyl to the paint (heat gun) and it’ll ‘suck right in’ to the texture of the paint and get a good bond.

Done right – it should last longer than the paint!!

I did one like that a few months ago. The decorators had left a slightly bumpy texture, so I did as Dave suggested: go over it all with a felt squeegee after removing the tape. End result looked great even though the vinyl showed the texture underneath. Make sure they’ve done a good job of the painting or you could pull paint off when you remove your tape.

heh. . I did that once 😳 it’s not a nice feeling when you remove the app tape and half the fascia comes away with it. After learning the hard way I ‘ll apply dry. . go have a cuppa. . ( leave for 20mins ) come back and spray the app tape with a light mist of application fluid. this tends to release the application paper and it’ll falls away without subjecting the surface underneath with any force ! Then go over with a heat gun and felt squeegee. .
