Advice on what Mug printing system to get please
Posted by Tracey Little on 9 April 2009 at 19:48Hi Guys,
I am looking to get into mug printing and am looking at Transfer Press and Nova chrome. What would you recommend or have comments on? I want to do the normal mugs but also perhaps finer china mugs and latte mugs.
I have looked at a mug press called the DG5 plus – looks great as it does 5 mugs but also caps, plates and bottom of mugs as well as the handle. Has anyone any experience of comments on this machine. Is is supplied by a company called Dom Global.
Thanks

if you search through the boards, you will see some people with a Chinese system, i have seen this system and works really well. however i think the secret is in the ink.

Nova Chrome, Xpres and Printer Owners amongst other do these systems. Latte mugs tend to be tapered and have (to my knowledge) have to be done in a regular domestic oven with a "Cactus" wrap.
I bought the DF160 Heat Press and the Epson 1400 printer with bulk ink. The blankets are fiddly to change over, but it can handle the full range of parallel sided mugs on 1 machine.

You can now get different elements for printing latte mugs, only seen them available in China at the moment though.
I’ve used the cheaper Mug Ovens (JML etc.) with great results, not quite as good image as with a decent press though and fiddly to use the wraps.
Can’t recommend NC as I’ve used them before on several occasions, search the boards for opinions here 🙁 Xpres I’ve always found first class, not cheap but the products and support have always been spot on.I’m about to buy a cheap mug press as I have to source all my equipment again from scratch.

I have 2 mug presses – a Jarin 2200 which was expensive, and a chinese one. I found I use the chinese one much more – not so much a quality issue, I simply prefer it (dont know why).
There is absolutely no difference in print quality between them – it really does depend on your inks, and the paper you use IMHO.🙂

I’ve had a Jarin 2200 for the last 3 and a half years, great prints but it does get through the silicon gaskets regularly.

Thanks for your comments.
Going to hopefully get an Epson 1400 along with easy flow inks this week along with some mug wraps. Have already got a JML oven so am gonna use this to ease myself into the process!!! Really want to do some fine bone china mugs and Latte Mugs…..does anyone know of a good supplier of these along with a wrap to go with them.
Going to the Sign Show next week and look out for other sublimation blanks……….coasters, mousemats and other stuff. Will also look at Mug Presses for the future and also a Cap Press …

Have a look at BMS Printer Owners and Home To Gifts for starters, you will catch up with the rest at the Sign Show.

Listawood stock the Latte mugs. You can get the clamps from Conde in the US but there are also a couple of suppliers that offer a heat press version of the Latte elements in both sizes. Your biggest problem with Latte mugs is the design. You need to account for the artwork which needs to be curved in relation to the taper of the mug. Not easy and limits what images to be placed on there.
A few decent suppliers about with a substantial range and mostly mentioned above. A lot comes down to personal preference.

If anyone needs a template making for tapers, give me a shout……..quite easy to work out if you are that way gifted……. :lol1:

Graeme – if you have anything other than the hand drawn pencil arc version which is knocking about on a few sites I would be interested in that. I know listawood had that available for download but I think it was only for the 12oz so if you have any info on the 17oz as well that would be great.
For graphics this is okay but if you have a group of people standing upright then it is tricky not to get any distortion when altering the shape…… or you could just let the outside people just look like the are leaning into the others.
-
All I need is the outside diameter at the rim and also at the base, and the height of the mug and the width of the handle………the rest is geometry calculations…………….. :lol1:
-
It must have been you then that did the drawing on Listawoods download 😉

Yep a template would be great……gonna need all the help I can get I reckon. Will have a look at listawoods site………..wondering now if I should go the whole hog and get the mug press instead of using the oven???!!! The elements are only used in the mug press – is that right?
-
Whether you use an oven or press is down to preference. I reckon there’s about a 50/50 split on this. It probably comes down to what you are used to as both methods work. You can do latte mugs both ways and the elements you mention are what is used in the press. You can get interchangeable elements with certain presses to do the different mugs. It’s only recently becoming more available for this. The only place for the oven wraps that I found was Conde in the US but they are easy to order from if needed. I prefer presses but that is just because it is easier for high volume imo as the handles don’t get hot and no clamps to fiddle with.
