We have been asked to finish off a job that was only half done.
It is expanded polystyrene letters stood off a metal background but the letters have not been painted and are rapidly turning brown.
The customer believes the letters will pull off and can be "Dunked" in paint but i don’t think that is going to work.

    1. the Glue sticking the letters to the standoffs cover many of the joints in the standoff
    2. the surface of the letters have been attacked by the sun and now is powdery
    3. Dunking them is going to leave unsightly runs

I think we will have to paint them insitu
    what would you do?
and what paint would you use?

I would paint the letters with a good emulsion and give them plenty of drying time then a coat of PVA which will seal the emulsion an give it a semi gloss finish and also a reasonable level of weather proofing. If you attempt to use an oil bound paint or solvent based paint you will destroy the poly.

Many years ago I made a set of letters for a shop to be used as a temporary sign, finished in a similar fashion, they were still up about 5 years later :smiles:

Thanks. I’ll have a go like that tomorrow and see how it looks.
I was thinking of epoxy paint but that sounds so much simpler.
