Advice on how to gain safe access to roof windows for vinyl application?
Posted by Phill Fenton on 17 June 2016 at 12:29I have been asked to apply vinyls signs onto the glass atrium on top of the roof. My question is what is the best way to gain safe access? It’s quite a shallow roof 30 degrees or so. Any ideas, or do I just walk away from this?

I would say the only safe way would be a roofing scaffold.
But the pricing of that would make your customer run away. If I was honest this is just one of those jobs I would never do purely down to health and safety and the cost of application.

Kind of what I’m thinking Dan
They specifically asked for it to be done on the outside David as this is how the building next door has been done
I’m liking the Helicopter idea Martin, :thumbup2: ( but surely in an instance like this a hard hat and hi vis vest should be worn?) -
Would a cherry picker boom lift be suitable you can hire them from a local tool hire company for about £150 a day.
-
It could potentially be useful. Well only if you have IPAF trained staff anyway.
The only issue even with a lift is that you will have to be leaning out of the basket a lot to apply this. They are not really made to work with this sort of application. Would be safer than roofing ladders but would be inconvenient with the basket getting in the way

How about a rope access company, you supply the vinyl and they’ll install it.

Just spotted a major flaw in your plan Martin….
Won’t the downdraft from the helicopter blades wreak havoc with the self adhesive vinyl? How do you expect me to be able to fit this in what would amount to a 70mph Gale force wind 🙄 -

Alternate suggestion below :thumbup2:

I take it those windows don’t open inward for cleaning at all.

2 cherrypickers coming from opposite sides of the building working together.
One to go to the apex and one to go below.
With a bloke in each bucket holding an end each of the vinyl

Somehow Rob I don’t think you and Martin C are taking this seriously enough, and I even have my doubts about Simon..[emoji53]

Phill, do you think one of those would be practical given you need to be able to squeegee whilst using those control’s?
H&S would have a feild day with you if spotted hovering above Remax! -

If you think Phil is going to need that sort of specialist gear Kev then he might just need a spur lash as well.

Well I sent an email off to my customer today explaining the difficulty in gaining safe access, and as some of my chums on the UKSB were being less than helpful with their suggestions, I was unable to offer a supply and fit service.
The building next door has signs on the atrium though (which is what prompted the enquiry) – I’d love to know how they did it 😕

Wise move Phill….
Although between us I thought we had it well resolved. 😕

It depends a lot on how tall the building is and how tall the atrium is but a solution like this might have done the job.

Also, I would have tried to talk with the guys next door and ask how that has been done. It’s worth to learn.
