  • Advice on deep recess – MINI

Posted by Adam Randell on 13 April 2011 at 21:04

I recently attended a level 2 Hexis wrapping course, and am going to be attempting to wrap 2 vehicles. Firstly – a new (59 plate) shape smart car, and my R56 MINI. The smart car, I am pretty confident with and think I will be able to do it fine, however the MINI had a very deep recess on the front bumper. I would like to do it in one piece if possible but think it may be too deep a recess here is a picture of it:

as you can see the recess is quite deep, any advice much appreciated! going to strip the car inc door handles, aerial, filler cap surround, light rings, rear light rings, rear lights, belt line, roof guttering and grill surrounds. as ive done all the work on the car myself taking these bits off isnt too much hassle, hoping removing them will ease the application of the vinyl. Using Hexis HX20000 military matt green.

    thanks in advance

Yea the Hexis course is really good, so is the Hexis vinyl – the air escape system is really good. if you give them a call and ask for Kris, he is the guy in charge of the wrapping side. 01543 411221

Should be able to do that recess without a problem, would suggest a practice with a black or white offcut first(if you have one), if its your first attempt at one as from memory the military green is over twice the price of basic gloss colours and would be painful if you did have an issue.

We have quite a lot of experience of working with the HX20000/30000 vinyls so fell free to PM if you have any questions.

Ian, thanks for the reply. I have all the vinyl already – ordered it in the week, it was slightly painful to order i must admit. 12m should cover it shouldnt it? I have some gloss black HX20000 spare so Ill give it a go with that first. Should i heat it to the recommended 40 degrees c, and slowly ease the vinyl into the recess and then post heat to 90? also – i have heard the satin/matte goes gloss when over stretched and over heated, do you think this could be a problem with the bonnet? is it just a case of taking my time with it?

I am wrapping the Smart car in the alligator skin HX20000, the boot handle is quite pronounced and cannot be removed – will this be okay to stretch over with heat and time?

sorry for all the questions but as im sure you appreciate – in total on 22m of very expensive vinyl is at steak! 🙂

id say that recess should be fine as there is enough spare material in the grille itself.

12m of 1370? the only problem with ordering such a small amount is if that you make a mistake, you may need to order more.

i was speaking to Kris on tuesday and 90 post heating is what they recommend.

the key to wrapping is using as little heat as possible, if you dont need to heat it, then don’t. its all about knowing which way to ‘push’ the material to get excess, and less vinyl where you need it

I think the Smartcar will be much harder to do than the MINI. Especially the rear quarters.

BTW how did you get the door handles off the MINI, I’ve heard that is really tricky to do?

Yea, i dont really have any room for error!

The MINI door handles are a bit of a pain, the R56 more so than the first gen R50/R53. There is a guide on NAM of how to remove them….3 hours apparently.

i dont have sufficient privileges to send PM’s :/ so cant send a PM ian, but wondered if you could give me a little advice – i have started wrapping the smart and its coming along beautifully, really pleased so far, just having a little trouble with the rear quarters. they are really tricky, any suggestions on how to tackle it? (pics attached)

(red one isnt the one im wrapping, just pic i found) also – i have taken the rear lights out to make it slightly easier

I’d practice with some cheaper vinyl first, they are tricky for experienced fitters.

How easy is it to get the rear lights out? Got to do one of these on Monday.

i have some plain black hexpress, ill practice with that first.

to get the rear lights out was easy (for me) but i am used to taking cars apart. you have to get the side skirts off, boot off and then the whole rear end. if you go onto evilution.co.uk they have the guides to get everything off – its very straight forward.
