  • Advice on creating a 3D embossed shape?

Posted by Richard Daniel on 5 March 2014 at 10:06

    Guys.

I was just wondering if anyone could help me?

My clients looking for me to produce the attached image at 1100mm wide.

I was suggesting building it up from powder coated Ali and printing the gradients. – They have now asked for something more 3D to look like an actual dome. – Has anyone ever produced anything like this before? – Would injection moulding be the way to go?

Various ways and materials to achieve something like that…

Rob, thanks for getting back, using a CNC would be ideal but its getting the gradients on there that I can see being an issue.

if done in 3D, would you need a print to simulate its dimensional?
it would be painted solid colours and the shape would do the rest.
if the panel in the centre is for text, that could also be routed at the same time.

if its really important and just a one off, you could have it air brushed onto the 3d shape? because applying vinyl to 3d would need to be wrapped, trimmed etc
maybe i am missing an easier option, im sure someone will correct me. 😀

    Rob.

I think the airbrushing may be the way forward, I would of lost the gradient in the red and just go for the countries. – no you mention it, probably could do away with both.

I also had reservations about mounting a print on it as you would be able to see the edge of the vinyl too.

Can’t see that being a problem for a CNC router as long as it’s not to deep, biggest problem would be z axis height if it were to be a dome shape. Material wise there are options as well, HDU would probably be a better option than wood & a lot lighter as well.

A more basic and easier approach is to do what is generally called 2.5D. This is a series of layers making up the sign (which is exactly what I have done here:-

I would cut a disc representing the globe and cover this with a printed graduated tint to crreat the illusion of a globe. The shapes of the land masses and the title main diagonal plinth would make up the 2nd and third layers. This is simple to achieve with no need to learn complex 3D design software.

    Guys

Thanks for the info, the HDU stuff looks like what I’m after, we have a company not to far that can cope with the cnc side of things.

Any idea how I would brand it?
